SLOW START TO THE SEASON? The following is information sent from MSNZ to member clubs regarding the state-of-affairs with the official various New Zealand championships. Release from MSNZ President Shayne Harris reads As many of you will be aware the Circuit Owners Group (COG) have been in discussions with various parties to try and bring together V8 Supertourers (ST) and NZV8 Touring Cars (TLX) into one V8 grid for the coming season. This was agreed by COG at their meeting held in Dunedin on the 24th May 2014. Motorsport New Zealand supports the COG in their attempts to bring the two classes together. MSNZ’s position is that it wishes to only award one New Zealand V8 Championship that both types of cars (ST and TLX) can compete for. Motorsport New Zealand also supports the continuation of the Schedule TL Championship as a development category. In light of the resolution passed at the COG meeting of 24th May, at this stage Motorsport New Zealand has declared no championships for any V8 class other than Schedule TL for the coming season. The only Championships approved to date are; Toyota Racing Series (TRS) Toyota 86 Formula Ford Formula First NZ Porsche Super Trucks Not quite sure what to make of the last bit —there is a championship for TL V8 cars, but its not included in the list . . . Is there a fine point here that I am missing? Its good to see that MSNZ are backing the Circuit Owners Group, but that resolution was made on May 24th and today is July 14th. Obviously no urgency then? If it was up to me, as a stop-gap measure, for the season ahead, I would have announced a NZ V8 Championship, run in classes, for vehicles that meet V8ST and V8TLX classes, pumped the championship full of hype and made it a must-do series for anyone serious about actually racing and the sport itself. The other point I would make is that its mid July and its already far too late to be planning race meetings, categories and schedules. Competitors and the public should have known my the end of March what the dates for the Summer Series were and what categories were going to be contested at each meeting. There are clear signs that we are heading into another season where things will be patched together at the last moment resulting in another disastrous year for the sport.
