SLS May Be So Loud It Could Damage Buildings And Hearing. The Mail Online (UK) (8/21, Prigg) reported that NASA’s “towering” Space Launch System is expected to be so loud when it launches that it could damage nearby buildings and astronauts’ hearing, according to NASA. In order to learn more about what could happen, NASA said, “A 5-percent scale model, including solid rocket motors, of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) is ignited to test how low- and high-frequency sound waves will affect the rocket on the launch pad.” Meanwhile, the article noted that NASA also said that it is about to begin tests of the SLS’s engines. Steve Wofford, SLS Liquid Engines Element manager, said, “This test series is a major milestone because it will be our first opportunity to operate the engine with a new controller and to test propellant inlet conditions for SLS that are different than the space shuttle.” The article also highlighted that along with launching people, the SLS could be initially used for sending unmanned spacecraft into the solar system.
