SMILES and wagging tails were seen all along Jacks Road, Missionvale, yesterday as pet owners were reunited with their dogs that survived a mass poisoning on Tuesday which left eight dead. The dogs were fed meat laced with suspected poison allegedly by a man who was angered the dogs had chased his herd of goats. The alleged perpetrator also hanged one dog. The 10 surviving dogs were treated at the 9th Avenue Veterinary Clinic in Walmer. Nine of them have since been returned to their owners, while one is still on a drip at the animal hospital. A teary Willem Blou, 72, could not stop patting five-year-old Chokkie’s head. “I was so scared when they took him away. One of my dogs had already died that day, and Chokkie was so sick I thought I might lose him too. But now my boy is back,” Blou said. Andrea Nel, 18, was ecstatic her Witvoet had come back alive and well. “I can’t even tell you how old Witvoet is. She has been my best friend since I was a little girl,” she said. In the meantime, volunteers from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League are interviewing residents from the area and gathering witness statements from people who saw a man hang the dog and poison the others. Volunteer Karlien van Schalkwyk, a former state prosecutor, said she knew what they would need to build a case against the suspect, so they wanted to gather as much information as possible. The man fled the area shortly after the incident. – Riaan Marais
