SMITH BACKS DOCTORS IN CALLING FOR THE RETURN OF ALL SERVICES AT HIGH RIVER HOSPITAL HIGH RIVER, AB (July 25, 2013): Wildrose Official Opposition Leader Danielle Smith is calling on Health Minister Fred Horne and AHS to immediately give a full timeline for the restoration of all services at the High River Hospital. Earlier today, High River doctors released an open letter to Premier Alison Redford and AHS calling on them to ensure that High River Hospital returns to performing all its pre-flood activities immediately. High River Hospital is one of the top rated small hospitals in Canada and performs a wide variety of acute care services such as inpatient care, full emergency care, long term care, cancer clinic, specialist clinics, general purpose operating rooms, a low-risk obstetrics clinic and a labour and delivery floor. Smith said that the statement issued earlier today by Minister Horne has done little to reassure staff and patients about the future of services at their hospital. “Minister Horne needs to clarify his clarification. The hospital suffered minimal damage during the flood and has been fully repaired,” Smith said. “The facilities are ready to perform at pre-flood levels, the doctors and nurses are ready to resume their pre-flood work, all that remains is for the government and AHS to allow that to happen. The minister’s qualified clarification is not good enough.” After all that residents have been through since the beginning of the flood, Smith said that restoring the hospital to full operations should be the top priority so the community can begin to get back to normal. “High River families want to deliver their babies in High River. Our cancer patients want to have their chemotherapy treatments in their local hospital. Our seniors in care want to return to their normal rooms and be close their families,” Smith said. “This hospital is part of what makes High River a special place to live. Minister Horne’s statement is insufficient. We need clarity on when doctors and patients can expect all services at the High River Hospital to resume.” BACKGROUNDER: Dr. Sarah Bell-Dingwall, Spokesperson for the High River Doctors can be reached at 403-615-3485.
