SMITH SCHOOL BUILDING UPDATE Jan 4th, 2015 To those who read my So long Ago post detailing my very unexpected Dec. 29th walk-through of the Smith building and resulting photos, I hope youll take time to read this as well, a bit more brief and to the point. I left the building that day with a heavy heart at the site of what had become of this grand, irreplaceable structure...and a bit angry, frankly, that it had been allowed to fall to its current state. No more, on either count. Neither of these emotions will serve to aid in the effort to save it from destruction, which must now be the primary focus. I am humbled to have been given a chance to work with Save Our Smith!, an all volunteer organization of concerned citizens and alumni whose goal is to work with, not against, the BOE and school Administration to find an economically feasible, common sense alternative for re-use of the building. We seek first to ask no more than for a 90 day delay in the awarding of any demolition contract in order to allow for more public involvement in the process of deciding the buildings future. Toward that end, we will later today launch a FaceBook page that will serve as an easier way for more concerned citizens and alumni to get information, follow the process, and give input. I personally feel this will be a great help in the effort, because it is obvious to me that there is a much greater lack of general knowledge amongst the populace concerning this important decision... than the situation deserves. I will post the link later today, and I encourage all who care about saving this vital community asset to visit the page and stay informed through the process. I think of myself as an optimistic realist, try to stay balanced about things like this. I was left with little hope about the buildings future that afternoon....now I know more. I am now aware of what efforts have already been put forward on its behalf, as well as many other facts which will all be shared on here with the public. I know without question that, being what FB is....there will immediately commence a cacophony of negative, blistering, ill-informed opinions from those who choose to ignore the facts and scream JUST TEAR IT DOWN....just as was done in the case of the Carlisle Building. Since that has now been settled....at least they will have something else to spend their time on. I will pay them no mind. Weve got a job to do....please join in our efforts.
