SNIPER 101 Part 46 - Factory Ammunition Discussion Published on May 4, 2013 What ammunition is best for extreme long range shooting? In this video Rex steps up the pace and discusses factory ammo selection and gives some quick tips in testing new loads. The number one limitation to factory loaded ammunition for extreme long range shooting will obviously be limited projectile selection. Some of the best bullets are not offered in factory loads, so custom reloading may be warranted. Ammunition consistency is generally pretty good when using brand name American factory ammo. One major brand that may require closer quality inspection may be Winchester. Most other Boxer primed brass cased factory ammo is loaded with a fair degree of precision. Tips: 1. Choose ammo with appropriate projectiles for LR shooting and be sure they are matched to your barrel twist rate. 2. Test different brands of ammo only after the barrel has been broken in and the bore has reached a state of consistency of fouling. Avoid testing ammo with a perfectly clean bore. Frictional dynamics will change as fouling increases. Wait till fouling equilibrium is achieved, then begin your ammunition group testing. 3. Once you have selected an appropriate factory ammo, try to obtain ammo in bulk qualities, preferably from the same lot of manufacture, to ensure maximum consistency. The tooling using to manufacture ammunition is adjusted and replaced as needed, so different batches may vary. 4. Avoid budget priced steel cased ammunition for long range precision shooting. 5. Research ammo before purchase. There are many great tests and articles published to review for all kinds of ammo out there. Take advantage of the collective experience of other marksmen to narrow your choices. NOTE: Unfortunately, due to the enormous selection of different cartridges and loads out there and considering the unique performance and character of each individual rifle out there, drawing any solid conclusions from previously tested rifle/ammo combinations out there may be unwise. A video attempting to cover them all would be unfeasible and possibly extremely painful to watch. Rex strongly recommends you do your final load selection only after you have verified that load is a good match in your particular rifle.
