SNP WIN EUROPEAN ELECTION IN SCOTLAND BIGGER SHARE OF VOTE IN SCOTLAND THAN ANY PARTY UK-WIDE The final results of the European election have been hailed today as a fantastic victory for the SNP and a vote of confidence in the Scottish Government. With the full results for Scotland now declared, the SNP has won the election – increasing its votes by 68,496 on 2009 and securing 28.9 per cent of the popular vote. This is a bigger share of the vote than UKIP achieved in the UK as a whole or in England, and a bigger share of the vote than Labour secured in Wales, where these parties topped the polls. UKIP achieved a smaller share of the vote in Scotland than in any electoral area south of the border. The SNP came first in 16 of Scotlands 32 local authority areas. SNP President Ian Hudghton and Alyn Smith have been returned as MEPs, giving the SNP twice as many Euro-MPs as the LibDems got across the entire UK as the backlash against their propping up of the Tories continues. Commenting, SNP Depute Leader and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “With the full results now in, this is a fantastic victory for the SNP and a vote of confidence in the Scottish Government. Over seven years into an SNP Government, and we have won the popular vote yet again in a national election, as once again voters put their trust in the SNP. In topping the poll in Scotland, the SNP have also won a higher share of the vote than UKIP across the UK or in England, and higher than Labour in Wales - where these parties topped the polls. The SNP came first in 16 of Scotlands local authority areas, compared to 10 for Labour, 4 for the Tories, 2 for Lib Dems, and none for UKIP - who didnt even come second anywhere in Scotland and finished 4th overall. There is a world of difference between the results in Scotland and in the rest of the UK. “Ian and Alyn have been strong and effective voices for Scotland, helping to defend our interests in Europe and put forward Scotland’s case on key issues in the European Parliament. “I am delighted that they have both been re-elected today and will continue to provide that strong, distinctive voice that Scotland needs in Europe. “With the rise of UKIP south of the border - where they secured three times the level of support they got in Scotland - it is more important than ever before that Scotland’s distinctive voice is heard in Europe. “There can now be no doubt that the only threat to Scotland’s place in Europe - and our ability to bring jobs and investment to Scotland - is the UKIP agenda that is dictating the terms of Westminster politics. “That agenda is the exact opposite of what Scotland needs, which is why we need to build our own relationship with our European neighbours as an independent country – something that only a Yes vote in September can secure.” -Ends- Note The SNP topped the poll in the following 16 council areas: Aberdeen Aberdeenshire Angus Argyll & Bute Clackmannanshire Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Dundee East Ayrshire East Dunbartonshire Falkirk Highland Moray North Ayrshire Perth & Kinross Stirling West Lothian Contact: SNP Press 07584 591 372
