SO RELAX....... The Council of Education Ministers has announced that this years matric results will only reflect the learners ID and exam numbers when published in newspapers. The newspapers will no longer reflect learners names as in previous years. The decision follows a recommendation by the National Senior Certificate Ministerial Task team that the practice of publishing the names of learners should be reviewed. Department spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga says, CEM decided that results will be published and that no names will be revealed in the newspapers. It will only be the exam number and ID number of the learner which will be able to access the result of the relevant candidate who has written the examination. Congress of South African Students President, Collin Malatji, has welcomed the decision, saying matric results are private information. We feel that it is the first step to many of our achievements, because we believe that matric results is a private information of an individual. We are also saying that the next step is that the department must declare all schools e-learning schools where students will be studying with tablets, that is the second leg of our struggle. Education analyst and Dean of the Education Faculty at the University of Johannesburg, Sarah Gravet, comments on the reason for the change. The worry is that there could be some inaccuracy that could lead to anguish and in the past also to suicide. So maybe it is better not to publish these names in newspapers but to allow for better accuracy by giving these results personally to learners.
