SO WHAT? In the village there are some things you do not tell everyone, and those you do not tell anyone at all. There are those you only tell your close family and there are those you keep to yourself. Village mates can react in a way that hurts you and your ego, but worse still, they can react in a way that your entire family and extended clan suffers eternal stigma. That is why it is said, kagutui ka mucii gatihakagwo ageni - the oilskin of the house is not for strangers. But villagers are curious people. They tend to know even your deepest secret. If you had kept a secret for so long, then you suddenly reveal the villager will react with awe, disbelief. So when a villager’s first reaction to a revelation is the phrase: Ni maheeni or “stop lying” they really do not mean you are a liar. They are simply saying the magnitude of that information is gargantuan in magnitude and significance. From hence, the information will spread to the entire village and to all the neighboring hamlets.
