SOAP Friday, March 14, 2014 Proverbs 14 Scripture: Proverbs 14 verse 29 He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, but he who is impulsive exalts folly. Observation: This verse jumped out at me because when I read it I had a vision of a person that is easy to anger, yelling and belittling others in an intense ambush of loud bravado. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. I compare that with someone that has equal reason to be upset, yet calmly states their facts or waits for the right timing. They are effective in a quieter manner. How often does the one that is impulsive and exalts folly, go back later and feel embarrassed about their outburst? Sorry for what they said or realize they have done verbal damage that can never be taken back? Application: Many should remember the old “count to 10” (or 50 or 100…) before they allow their “feelings” to drive them to a loud, negative verbal outburst. Unfortunately, they often are in a pattern of outburst and then feeling guilty, sorry or embarrassed. We should strive not to put ourselves in that position to begin with and come up with solutions to walk away, take a time out, go exercise or listen to something soothing, before we respond in anger. We have to remember that our words can not ever be unheard or undone and they can scar and hurt like a physical wound. Prayer: Lord please help us to remember to put space between our source of conflict and our reaction. Let us be prudent and slow to wrath in our responses to people, both strangers and those we love. Help us to slow down, have great understanding and be kind to those we encounter and love. Amen. What verse stood out to you in Proverbs 14?
