SOAP Genesis 9 Scripture: Genesis 9:12-17 (ESV) 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” Observation: The flood is done, it must have been a time of celebration for Noah and family. What is interesting is that God makes a covenant with Noah and his family that he will never repeat the flood that just happened and God gives a tangible reminder, a rainbow. This covenant is established by God, and he promises that he will hold his end of the bargain. Application: In life, it is important to have tangible things to remind us of important promises. Whether it is a rainbow to remind us that God will never punish the earth again, or a wedding ring that symbolizes a promise between a husband and wife, or even a tattoo that reminds us of a loved one, or simply something that we love. Even the cross is a tangible reminder of God’s love and promise for us. So as we are reminded when we see a rainbow, we need to never forget all the great promises that God has given us just like when he showed Noah and his family the first rainbow. Prayer: Father, thank you for the promises that you hold. Even when we deserve punishment, you hold to the covenant that you established. May we be reminded of your promises and trust you more as we see these tangible covenants. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
