SOAP for 10/14/14 SOAP on Gen. 44 Scripture: Gen 44 Observation: Joseph has a final test for his brothers to see if their ways have changed. Joseph has his brothers’ sacks filled with food, as much as they can carry but he tested them by putting his own silver cup in the sack of Benjamin who was the youngest son assuming that Joseph is dead. Joseph sends out his servant to check for his silver cup and just as he planned, Benjamin is caught with it. It is then that the test happens, because Joseph says that whoever is found with the cup will have to be Joseph’s servant. After much talk between Joseph and Judah, Judah explains to Joseph that they will not return back to their father Jacob without Benjamin. He is very special to Jacob because their younger brother, Joseph, was killed. Judah offers himself as a slave and will not leave Benjamin behind in Egypt. Application: There is a test that is going on here, and Judah and the brothers actually pass it. They do not make the same mistake that they had made with their brother, Joseph. They loved him so much that they were willing to sacrifice their own lives for the sake of their brother, unlike what they had done with Joseph. This reminds me of the great work that Jesus Christ does for all of us, he lays his own life down for us. And he will not leave us behind. Instead, he went to the cross taking all of what we deserve and putting it on himself. This story is a great foreshadowing of Jesus. Prayer: Father thank you that you are a God who does not test us so that we fail. Instead you have solved our biggest test, which is sin. Thank you for this story of how Judah sacrifices his own well being for the sake of his younger brother. But mostly, thank you for sacrificing your Son for us. In Jesus name.
