SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD WAR I Kwizmatix INK ~ EmmaSattinKMX Blog Day 1 I personally have been using social media for approximately 10yrs. Throughout the years I have noticed the enormous effect it has had in peoples perceptions of communication. Before I talk about what we all know as Facebook, the golden standard of social media today. Lets just take a little look where it all started. Who remembers Friendster? Very few I imagine. Friendster was founded in 2002 and was arguably one of the first of todays social platforms. Its features were very similar to Facebook. From the profiles, messaging capacities, ect... Unfortunately, even after reaching 3 million users, due to the huge competition arriving from 2003-2004 in the guise of MySpace, Facebook, Digg, LinkedIn. Yet it never died and relaunched in 2011 as a gaming platform boasting over 115 million users. In 2006 Mark Zuckerberg opened Facebook to global users over the age of 13. So from the first, to the most used Social Media Platform of todays generation, Facebook now sits with well over 864 million users daily! The growth was phenomenal, but unfortunately today in 2014 we as users are censored to what we can and cannot post, while yet not being recompensed for the use of our personal data, nor for the content we post. We are also finding ourselves being penelised for adding too many friends, posting too much, and joining too many social groups. Is this what we expected when this platform was opened up to us as users? Of course not! Yet the revenue being created is absolutely mind boggling. And of course, as was inevitable, users are starting to use other platforms that do not invade our privacy. Personally I refused to download the new messenger to my phone simply due to the outrageous user agreement we are expected to sign.
