SOCIAL SOLIDARITY As individuals, we have a stake in the family’s and country’s welfare. We need to make personal contributions to the common good of the nation – contributions not merely confined to impassioned and eloquent speeches for unity and progress, but manifest in concrete actions that produce tangible, though not necessarily immediate, results. Thought and desire precede action but by necessity compel it. Otherwise, we would become merely a nation of wagging tongues and mad sentimental tears, but not a community of concerned hands. Inaction would give credence to the editorial comment that Filipinos talk too much and do little; indeed, that Filipinos talk so much they can do very little. The call is to gaze, beyond ourselves and our families, at the larger horizon of opportunity in civic responsibility: to fail here would be to stop selfishly short of authentic altruism.
