SOD: Blessed Anton Martin Slomsek (1800-62)--Born in present-day Slovenia, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ordained a priest in 1824; taught at a seminary. Promoted the Slovene language among the seminarians at a time when it was in danger of dying out due to the dominance of German in the empire. Became bishop of a Slovene majority diocese in 1846. Founded schools, wrote textbooks, started a publishing house all with the goal of supporting the Slovene language and culture and nurturing the peoples faith, which was deeply imbued in that culture. Today, the area around his diocese has a nearly 100% literacy rate. Much of the credit is given to him for the foundation of education that he laid.
