SODELPA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUNG PEOPLE SODELPA will create a strategic plan with its focus on employment and empowerment of our young people. This will be aligned with our policies for spurring economic growth. We will conduct a complete review of job projects for youth, and the National Employment Centre, which is ineffective, will be restructured. A 200 per cent tax rebate is to be offered to employers taking on first-time job seekers. A SODELPA government will enter into PARTNERSHIPS with our young people to nurture and enhance their talent and potential in academia, sports, leadership, entrepreneurship, artistic and musical pursuits and the performing arts. There will be support for meaningful participation by young people in all international conventions and conferences attended by state representatives. We will set a 10-year target period, for a 25 per cent membership by youth representatives in statutory boards, local government councils and government- owned companies. We will increase support and funding for the existing National Youth Council with the emphasis on family, and strengthen the institution as an independent representative body for youth organisations. Similarly there will be more support for the Youth Assembly of the Fiji Islands (YAFI) and the Provincial Youth Forum of the Fiji Islands (PYFFI). The Student Youth Parliament Programme is to be reinstated. Its mission will be to help instill respect for and knowledge of the democratic processes. We will introduce a Young Mayors’ Scheme enabling youth leaders to work alongside elected municipal councils in the administration of towns and cities. The Young Mayors will specialize in promoting the interests and concerns of young citizens. There will be a full feasibility study on the establishment of a Young Patriots Movement as outlined in our education policies. Funding and support will be allocated for youth sport services and recreational amenities and sports scholarships. We will increase support for youth participation in agriculture and encourage agricultural entrepreneurship to alleviate the high rural unemployment.
