SOFIA (August 18) – Russia kicked off the men’s freestyle events with a pair of gold medals on Saturday, the fifth day of the junior wrestling world championships. Two-time cadet world champion Zavur UGUEV (RUS) claimed his first junior crown at 50kg and Alan ZASEEV (RUS) rolled to five wins by technical fall at Arena Armeetz in Sofia to take the 74kg crown. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan and the United States won their first gold medals of the junior world meet with 2012 European junior champion Akhmednabi GVARZATILOV (AZE) taking the 60kg crown and Kyle SNYDER (USA) coming off his back to win at 96kg. 50kg (19 entries) UGUEV (RUS), the cadet winner in 2011 and 2012, scored late with a takedown to tilt and then a double-leg to the back to hang a 13-4 technical fall on European junior champion Suleyman ALTI (TUR) at 5:44 of the 50kg final. In the bronze medal finals, 2011 Asia cadet champion Yernur KABATAYEV (KAZ) racked up a technical fall over Asia junior bronze medalist Makhmudjon SHAVKATOV (UZB) with the end coming 35 seconds into the second period. Hometown favorite Mehmed FERAIM (BUL), the 2010 European cadet runner-up, edged 2012 world cadet bronze medalist Satoshi FUJIKAWA (JPN), 3-0, on a force-out and two penalty points. Shota PHARTENADZE (GEO), a 2011 world cadet bronze medal winner, dropped Andriy SVYRYD (UKR) to his back with a fireman’s carry for the fall at 1:49 of the first period. Gamlet RAMONOV (RUS), meanwhile, landed on top of a takedown counter throw attempt as time ran out in the first period for a 7-0 technical fall win over Mark GREY (USA). The 17-year-old American high school wrestler of the year, however, stormed back with takedowns and force-outs for the technical fall at 4:04. Yusup MALACHMAGOMEDOV (RUS), the 2011 Euro cadet silver medalist, rolled up a quick technical fall against Robin FERDINAND (GER) to give Russia its second bronze medal – and fourth medal overall -- for the evening. Satywart KADIAN (IND), a bronze medalist at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, racked up four points in each period against European junior champion Ali BONCEOGLU (TUR) and took the technical at 3:40.
