SOKPONU I still remember the lonely roads to Sokponu, Rugged and bumpy Bordered by the thickness of the bush. Bush, so bushy it was; And in the bush, all kinds of food for chop. In the wild is Sokponu Where the cock still crows at dawn. And so did my friends and I journey into the wild. So long was the journey that ended at the thickness of the dark; Passing through tens and hundreds of hills, We all tried to avoid the blind flight of the bats. We were all cold blooded at this point, As only the car light, our only source to see, led us through the lonely dusty path. Finally, we stopped at Sokponu; After we had navigated endlessly like troubled Hyneas. We met with the inhabitants who were about six foot plus. And so did we look Zacheus before them. Built with mud and roofed with palms: So did everyone in Sokponu have a place to nest. Children played all day And in the play they learnt from grownups; As every grownup in Sokponu was considered to be another Mum and Dad. With their wild smiles, Wild dancing steps And the burukutu that passed for a communion, We all knew we were welcomed in; And so did we look like aliens, As we wore jeans, suits and tie. The Supreme leader spoke to us, And so did the interpreter, the only school teacher in Sokponu, Manage to put his disjointed English together; And with our eyes so down to the ground We all tried to listen carefully. Their women passed for a wine And with our restless eyeballs we all drank-drunk; As only the men of Sokponu were men enough to handle their excesses. The old in Sokponu wrinkled scaringly, As their dateless ages only the gods knew better: The young men had big chest to show; Like the gladiators in the ancient arena, Who can contest? For the brown rivers of Sokponu, We all became fishes; With their constant encouragement, we did so well with the water like we all had gills. In my silent hours have I wondered; What a great catastrophy it would be, If Sokponu, the pride of natures black race, Should oneday, someday be invaded by the masquerades from the west!!!
