SOLAR STREET LAMPS INSTALLED IN KATHMANDU. IS THIS DEVELOPMENT GOING TO BE PROVED A SUSTAINABLE ONE? Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has planned to install around 1,600 solar lamps in the major streets in Kathmandu. Baneshwor, Sundhara, Babarmahal, Maitighar, Durbarmarg, Bhadrakali areas are already equipped with solar lamps. Each lamp is 40 watt. (Source: myrepublica/onlinekhabar) It’s a great news to hear and to look at. But the question that hangs over as a challenge is “Will this change long last?” Or it is only the elephant’s tooth just for showing for few days. No doubt this is a new beam of hope for the development but if not taken care and neglected, it is not going to work at all. The project like Trolley Bus, started in Nepal has turned into a massive failure. We hope this one does not turn into another failure. For this every one of us including NEA, Government and the whole people must be aware of it. “Everyone’s property is no-one’s property” this statement has better got flourished in Nepal because we treat the public property as no-one’s property. We, the people, often express our anger of government, political parties or any personal issue by throwing bricks and ruining these public property. Whereas, even the government and other stakeholders seem so careless that once they install, they longer don’t care its presence and performance. But it’s really time to change and make this change the sustainable one. It’s ultimately up-to us whether to make it long-lasting or turn it into the next failure. Let us take the full advantage of the opportunity but also let us not forget our duty to save these properties and make our life more convenient.
