SOLOMON ISLANDS As of 2 May, four weeks after severe flash flooding struck the Solomon Islands, the number of evacuation centres has been consolidated down to five in Honiara and Guadalcanal Province (GP). Funding is needed for on-going food aid distributions.Household assessments indicate that 369 households in Honiara have been destroyed or damaged, with 15 per cent badly damaged in GP. Assessments on impact to businesses in Honiara indicate an estimated 99 per cent of micro, small and medium enterprises have experienced severe damage. There are increases in diarrhea cases across Honiara and GP as well as increases in the number of cases of influenza-like-illness and malaria in GP only. Both the National Referral Hospital in Honiara and Good Samaritan Hospital in GP are struggling to meet the surge in patient demand. A Humanitarian Action Plan estimates that US$13.9 million is required to meet the needs of affected people over the next three months, with US$11.6 million unmet. Priority areas identified are Health, WASH, Shelter, Protection and Food Security.
