SOME IMPORTATANT THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE VIRTUES OF ‘DHUL HIJJAH’ Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijjah). “ [Saheeh al Bukhari, Vol. 2, Book of Two Festivals (Eids), Hadith No. 969] He (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) also said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days (i.e., the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah) Therefore praise and glorify Allaah abundantly in these days. [Musnad Ahmad, Hadith No. 5446] 1. YOU SHOULD FAST It is Sunnah to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah as fasting is one of the best of deeds. [Sunan Abu Dawood, Book of Fasting, Hadith No. 2437] * Nafl fasting may be extremely difficult for some people. The following Ahadith should provide some encouragement to fast as many of the first nine days as possible. *Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah (9th of Dhu’I-Hijjah), expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year. [Sahih Muslim, Book of Fasting, Hadith No. 1162] Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Indeed, anyone who fasts for one day for Allah’s Pleasure, Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of) seventy years.” [Sahih al Bukhari, Vol. 4, Book of Fighting for the Cause of Allaah, Hadith No. 2840] *10th Dhul Hijjah is Eid al Adha, and one should NOT fast on the day of Eid. REMEMBER: Ayyaam al Tashreeq are the days of Eating and Drinking. * Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) also forbade fasting on the Days of Tashreeq (i.e. 11th, 12th & 13th of Dhul Hijjah). Narrated from Abu Murrah the freed slave of Umm Haani’ entered with ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr upon his father ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas. He offered them food and said, “Eat.” He said: “I am fasting.” ‘Amr said: “Eat, for these are the days on which the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us not to fast, and he forbade fasting on these days. The narrator Malik said: These are the day of al-tashriq (i.e. 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah).” [Sunan Abu Dawood, Book of Fasting, Hadith No. 2418] Allahs Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The days of Tashreeq are the days of eating and drinking.” [Sahih Muslim, Book of Fasting, Hadith No. 1141] 2. RECITING TAHMEED, TAHLEEL AND TAKBEER It is Sunnah to recite takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar (Allaah is most great)), tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillah (praise be to Allaah)), tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (There is no god but Allaah)) and tasbeeh (saying Subhaan-Allaah (Glory be to Allaah)), during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, saying these words out loud in the mosques, homes, streets and every place in which it is permissible to remember Allaah, to perform this act of worship openly and proclaim the greatness of Allaah. [Musnad Ahmad, 7/224] * The Takbeer may include the words “Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, la ilaaha ill-Allaah; wa Allaahu akbar wa Lillaahi’l-hamd * The Takbeer is recommended from Salaat al Fajr on the day of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah) until the time of Salaat al Asr on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. 3. UDHIYAH (SACRIFICE), Commonly known as ‘Qurbani’ * It is strongly recommended in the Sunnah to offer animals for slaughter on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah or on the 11th , 12th or 13th Dhul Hijjah. This Sunnah of Udhiyah (Sacrifice) is so strong that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The one who is by the means and does not perform the Udhiyah (sacrifice), should not approach the place of Eid Salaah.” [Musnad Ahmad, Hadith No. 8273] *The Sunnah indicates that the one who wants to offer a sacrifice during the 10th to 13th Dhul Hijjah should refrain from cutting his/her hair and nails starting from the sighting of the Crescent of the month of Dhul Hijjah (i.e. 1st of Dhul Hijjah) until he has offered his sacrifice. Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “If anyone has in his possession a sacrificial animal to offer as a sacrifice (on Id al-Adha), he should not get his hair cut and nails trimmed after he has entered the first days of Dhul Hijjah” [Sahih Muslim, Book of Sacrifices, Hadith No. 1977]
