SOME MYTHS AND LEGENDS IN YORUBALAND You know, there are so many legends or myths in Yoruba land. Some of them we know their stories . Some, we dont. Let see if we have culture historians here who could help. The story behind the Osomalo behaviour of the Ijesha people is well known. But I dont know why, in praising Ibadan people, Yoruba always call them theives. Hear this... Ibadan, nibi ole ngbe jare oloun Ibadan ti o jale, oju lon ro ... Haba! If you say Ibadan people are mostly butchers, (alapata) we know that If you say dem love motor drivers job, (dereba) we know that But where is that thief story coming from? The same thing for Ijebu. Yoruba always compare them with snakes. Ijebu re... Ejo ree If you say Ijebu love going to parties, we can see that. If you say dem get original jazz, we can see that. If you say dem dey drink gari, we can see dat. If you say dem love money, we can see that. But that snake thing, where is it coming from? Has anybody found out the stories behind those Ibadan and Ijebu stuff? Do we still have those old babas who can recollect any incidence in history leading to such coinages?
