SOMETHING TO READ. INTERVIEW WITH JUDGE JULES. Hi Jules, hope Amanda and the family are well. Hi Dan, yes were all really good - looking forward to another busy Summer... So, Judgement Sundays - San Antonios busiest night for years with its electric atmosphere and amazing line ups - what do you put its success down to and why did you choose Eden over Es Paradis, did you think you were taking a risk back in 1999? Well I knew the owner very well at Eden and was delighted to be consulted in the development of turning the venue - from what was of course The Star Bar which was always considered naff into a great venue. I had a say and gave my opinion on the layout, sound, lights and of course musical direction. Its been open ten, eleven years now, but you know that even as recent as six years ago travelling around the world and talking to clubbers about Eden, nobody really had heard of it. Thats all changed now. I like to think I have helped but the owners and of course Isaac Hidalgo who runs the show now have been immense. Im very proud. So born back in 1966, a good year for Englands football team but also the year when the likes of celebrities such as Chris Rock, Cindy Crawford, Helena Bonham Carter, Janet Jackson, John Cusack, Roman Abramovich, Adam Sandler, Kiefer Sutherland, Eric Cantona, Mike Tyson and Shirley Manson were born - who out of that little list would you most like to have dinner with and chew the fat? Eric Cantona, just because hes such an enigmatic character and Id love to get into his brain to see what makes him tick. An intriguing man. When did you first Ibiza, the best clubbing island in the world? In 88. I was there to DJ at Pacha, it was a few years after all of the clubs had to have roofs put on and it was a shame not to have seen that, but it was still amazing. Did you venture over the hill into San Antonio on that trip? Of course, had to have a look. I think the low point of San Antonio was the whole Sky Ibiza Uncovered TV series. However the reputation has changed so much now. How did you feel about Pete Tongs Wonderland arriving at your club last year? Were you consulted? Well I wasnt consulted about it but obviously I was told about it. What it meant to me though was that all the hard work I have put in over the last decade has worked. Wonderland hasnt affected the numbers at Judgement at all, I think its great for the venue. Eden is now acknowledged as a major venue in Ibiza. A fervent follower of football, for some reason supporting Arsenal (who unlike Everton arent in the FA Cup Final this year) - what was a prouder moment, being asked to remix the Premier Leagues official anthem in 2005 or appearing on The Richard And Judy show? Ha. Obviously the football option. I actually DJd at the End Of Season party for Arsenal last year and Im doing the same this Saturday. The players were actually well behaved last year. What do you think have been some of the biggest tunes that Ibiza has broken due to DJs playing them there for the first time, do you think Miami has been important with bringing big records to our dancefloors. To be honest, I dont agree about Miami. If the Miami WMC didnt exist the hits would still roll out. Ibiza is more significant. I mean, its a third of a year compared to a week in March that really, not a lot of English clubbers go to because its so expensive. I also think that the bars in Ibiza dont get as much credit as they deserve. Think about it, clubbers go to three or four bars before heading off to a club and the bars with their DJs bring a lot of new stuff to us. Anything that were dancing to and hearing on the radio is all propagated in Ibiza that Summer. Apart from Eden which I know you love, what is the best club in Ibiza and why? Pacha - although it lacks atmosphere now. How do you think the new Boho club in San An is going to do? I cant really comment on that until I see it. Extasis was nothing to write home about so it will be interesting to see how, if, they have remodeled it. Who is the best guest you have ever had on at Judgement Sundays? Really difficult question. So many, but I love playing with people like Richard Durant, Sander Van Door and Lisa Lashes. What are your favourite Ibizan : Restaurant : SaCapella, the old monastery. Its really close to our house and is just an experience every time we go. Its unique. Beach : Cala Jondal. Sunset location : Well obviosly I love the mass exodus to the Sunset Strip to places like Cafe Del Mar and Mambo - but the view from our terrace at the house is special. Bar bar : Bar M, our pre parties there are brilliant and loads of fun. What have been the big Judgement Sundays anthems over the years? How long have you got? Time To Burn, Angelic, Ferry Corsetns Rock Your Body - those were tunes from the early days... You have been behind countless compilation series such as The Ministry Clubbers Guide To, A Retrospective of House, The Annual plus various releases of your own under various aliases including the huge hit with your wife Amanda, Angelic that youve just mentioned - what have been your favourite releases? Well I think that compilations are a snapshot of that particular year of time of year when I mix them. My three personal albums, two under my own name and one under Highgate are much closer to my heart. What can we expect from Judgement Sundays 2009, its your tenth anniversary and I hear Krafty Kuts and Micky Slim to do their Evening With nights... Yes looking forward to that. We also have a couple of White Parties which I dont think has been done in Ibiza for years. The thing about Judgement Sundays is that its like one big theatre. As soon as you walk through the doors the madness hits you. We spend so much money on our entertainment. 50 dancers, loads of stilt walkers, trapeze artists - it really is a pleasure to play at...
