SONA? No Thanks, Id Rather Plant Trees Today, once again, the President will give his State of the Nation Address (SONA). But I will not be listening. I will not be listening because what he will say are mostly lies and promises and will not address directly the plight of the poor Philippine farmers and the worsening environmental situation. It will not explain what needs to be done to increase food production so we stop depending on imports. it will not give solutions to the use of deadly and dangerous chemicals that have enslaved farmers. Pnoys speech will not announce an increase in the farm gate price of rice or corn. It will not explain why thousands of hectares of land intended for farming are being sold and leased out to foreign multinationals resulting to food security stress. It will not explain why the name Filipino farmers is used as collateral in siphoning public money just to be pocketed by corrupt politicians and opportunists like Janet Napoles. No, Pnoys talk will be about what he has done or imagine to have done. Nothing will be said about farmers plight because his administration has not put the farmers in the highest degree of respect, as he does to businessmen, politicians, military men and crooks. Lastly, i will not listen because he has no pro-active program for battling climate change and stopping tree cutting in this country. Instead, today, im going out to plant trees. And I will talk to a group of farmers how to prevent their soil from being eroded. This is is a more noble thing to do.
