SONG 5 When the season and birds pine the loyal heart must smile and shine: it suffers for a love divine. It must encounter and live through weal and woe, joy and sorrow – to do what it for love must do. The brave, grown wise, must be content to bear love distant, never spent, and all the tribulations sent must undergo and never swerve – but rather take comfort or ache – from all that love holds in reserve. Love’s ways are terrible indeed as the experienced will concede: love will bring comfort and impede the very peace of mind it lends, since he whom love greets, love meets, many unbearable hours spends. Sometimes hot, sometimes cold, sometimes modest, sometimes bold: its whimsies boundless, manifold. Love calls in that great debt we owe its rule, its sway and makes us pay while it wraps us in its glow. Sometimes painful, sometimes kind, sometimes distant, or close behind: he who trusts in this will find he can rejoice in love’s strange yoke – love’s warmth he knows, and its harsh blows – love hurts and heals him in one stroke. Love may buoy up or abase, it may hide or show its face, those it touches learn its grace only after trials and tests, when to the core they taste love’s lore, discovering where true love rests. Sometimes heavy, sometimes light, sometimes dark and sometimes bright: in carefree hope, in stressful fright, in taking and in giving, the souls that roam through love’s vast home must here be always living.
