SONG OF THE DAY - Its November 13th, and that brings us to 2008, with todays pick of Favorite Albums Through The Years from another great Canadian band, I wish would have stuck around a little longer. The Stills were a Canadian rock band from Montreal, Quebec, formed in 2000, and disbanded in 2011. The band members - Tim Fletcher (vocals, guitar), Dave Hamelin (vocals, guitar, drums), Liam ONeil (keyboards, percussion, backing vocals), Olivier Corbeil (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Gregory Paquet (guitar) - had known each other since the age of 12 and played in various bands prior to forming The Stills. The band signed with Vice Records, releasing their EP, REMEMBERESE on June 17, 2003, followed by their excellent full-length debut album, LOGIC WILL BREAK YOUR HEART later that year. Before the release of their second album, WITHOUT FEATHERS in 2006, Greg Paquet left the band to finish his university degree. Dave Hamelin replaced him on guitar and vocals, leaving the drum chair to new member Julien Blais, while Liam ONeil became a full-time member of the band on keyboards. WITHOUT FEATHERS marked a slight stylistic shift in the bands material, and while it still featured some great songs, I wasnt as thrilled with the changes. The bands deal with Vice Records would end before their next album, and they found a new home on Canadian imprint, Arts & Crafts. OCEANS WILL RISE, was the bands third album, released August 19, 2008, and may just be my favorite by them. Once again working with producer Gus van Go, The Stills new material, beginning with the anthemic lead single, Being Here, conveyed a rejuvenated, reinvigorated sense of being. The album split the difference in what was best on their debut and second records, and created a whole that was even more powerful. According to vocalist Tim Fletcher, the group felt a raw energy of inspiration during the new albums recording efforts that was absent in previous sessions, and it showed in the finished product. Other standout cuts were Snakecharming the Masses, whose pulsing, twisting beat mirrored its title, Im With You, Dont Talk Down and Eastern Europe. OCEANS WILL RISE was awarded a Juno Award (the Canadian Grammys) for Alternative Album of the Year during the 2009 Juno Awards Gala, yet sadly, it would prove to be the groups last album. For todays song selection, going with the charging, and gentle, Rooibos/Palm Wine Drinkard, which is a great tune to get you going for a quick workout, then cool down. youtu.be/EwdQRLYEn4w
