SONG OF THE DAY - Its a Two for Tuesday kind of day with continued theme of Great Albums From 1979, and todays featured band had not one, but two album releases that year! And wouldnt you know it - they also just happen to be one of my all-time favorite bands. Cheap Trick, the American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1973. The band of Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar) and Bun E. Carlos(drums), got their big breakthrough with our first pick, the classic live album CHEAP TRICK AT BUDOKAN. Unlike here in their home country, Cheap Trick found early mega-success in Japan first, and capitalized on this popularity by recording CHEAP TRICK AT BUDOKAN on April 28 and 30, 1978, with an audience of 12,000 screaming Japanese fans nearly drowning out the band at times. The album was intended for release only in Japan but with strong airplay of the radio only promotional album From Tokyo To You, an estimated 30,000 import copies were sold in the United States and the album was released domestically in February 1979. The album also introduced two previously unreleased original songs, Lookout and Need Your Love. In the UK, a limited number of vinyl pressings were issued on translucent Kamikaze Yellow vinyl. In the U.S., the album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and became the groups best selling album with over three million copies sold. It also ranked number 13 on Billboards Top Pop Albums of 1979 year-end chart. The single I Want You To Want Me reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The second single, and todays song pick, a cover of Fats Dominos Aint That A Shame, also charted reaching number 35. Interestingly, when CHEAP TRICK AT BUDOKAN was first released on compact disc in the U.S., initial pressings contained an alternate evenings performance of some of the concert mix (as it was recorded over two nights). Notably the guitar & bass trade offs of Aint That A Shame are very different from the original vinyl release mix of the song. youtu.be/srTVYKybihQ
