SONG OF THE DAY - Todays selection of Great Albums From 1979 comes from a band who sold more records than ANY American band in the 1970s. The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971, by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. (Leadon would later leave the band, being replaced by the more rock flavored Don Felder, who a few albums later was joined by Joe Walsh). They are one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold over 150 million records—100 million in the U.S. alone—including 42 million copies of Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) and 32 million copies of Hotel California. With five number-one singles, six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards and six number one albums, they are the fifth-highest-selling music act and highest-selling American band in US history. THE LONG RUN was the sixth studio album released the Eagles. It came out on Asylum Records in the United States and in the United Kingdom, and was the first Eagles album not to feature their founding member, Randy Meisner who was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit. It was the last studio album released by the band until 2007s Long Road Out Of Eden (though four studio tracks were included on 1994s Hell Freezes Over) some 28 years later. When released in September 1979, THE LONG RUN debuted at #2 on Billboards Pop Albums chart, and a week later hit #1 dethroning Led Zeppelins In Through The Out Door. It was their last #1 album of the 1970s, and reigned for eight weeks in the #1 slot. It has sold more than seven million copies to date in the US alone. The album took two years to complete. It was originally intended to be a double album, but the band members were unable to write enough songs. THE LONG RUN generated three Top 10 singles - todays song pick, the chart-topping rocker Heartache Tonight, the albums title cut, and the ballad I Cant Tell You Why. Those singles reached #1 and #8 respectively. The band also won a Grammy Award for Heartache Tonight. Also featured on the record was In the City, a song first recorded by their guitarist Joe Walsh for the movie soundtrack for The Warriors. The Sad Cafe (about the bands experiences at The Troubadour in Los Angeles) and Those Shoes also received substantial radio airplay. youtu.be/snPgFNMCXBs
