SONG OF THE DAY (Top 15 Songs of 2014): 6. La Dispute - Woman (Reading) --- Well, were starting to get down to the nitty gritty at this point - arriving at some of the absolute best and most important songs and albums of 2014. The Top 6 was pretty much always set in stone for me, it was just a matter of what order they would end up in. It starts with a song from La Disputes incredible fourth album, Rooms of the House, a concept album that looks at the various inhabitants of a single house over the course of years and generations, and how they all shape the character of this place, leaving behind parts of themselves when they leave. Typically, when I think of La Dispute, I think of a pain, rage, sorrow, and self-doubt seething just beneath the surface, and occasionally bursting forth - this is a large part of why I love this band. They are built from rawness and hard truth. But, while there are plenty of songs from this album that stand out, this is the one I keep coming back to is Woman (Reading), probably the most restrained and contemplative track. They put down the tragedy and anger for a moment, to simply reflect on a particular woman, as the narrator attempts to walk himself through the creative process of how to best illustrate her in his writing. Its a beautiful tribute that has vague senses of both sadness and appreciation - but its full of the beautiful grey areas that most resembles real life. Also, the song features an amazing line that basically sums up the theme of the album: Sometimes I think about all the people that lived here before us. How the spaces in the memories you make change the room from just blueprints to the place where you live. Theres an official video for this song, which I will place in the comments section, but I actually prefer this lyrics video, as La Dispute is one of the few bands whose effect is truly heightened by a full understanding of the lyrical content. https://youtube/watch?v=cngd8AiaK6I
