SONG OF THE WEEK: “Spying in Barcelona” (Complete Unedited Improvisation, from the download album IF I COULD DRESS LIKE CLIVE OWEN--MUSIC FOR FILMS NOT YET MADE). Within the last few months I’ve had the pleasure of meeting several people from Barcelona, Spain. I was able to say I had a song about their city, even though they didn’t know me from a can of paint. “Spying from Barcelona” (as it appeared on my 2011 I LIKE THE STREET CD) was edited from the Café Khufu improv sessions (New York City, October 2010) with Carmen Estevez Calero, Felipe Torres (both on percussion) and Richard Devletian--who normally plays stellar guitar but switched to bass for this track while I did guitar at his suggestion. I vamped on the “Secret Agent Man” guitar signature while the percussionists took the rhythm into a Moorish groove—hence the title referencing that region of Spain. I’ve always been interested in the edginess of “spy movie music,” and when I was finalizing the songs for the I LIKE THE STREET project, this session became a logical “intermission” (or sequel) to the song “If I Could Dress Like Clive Owen.” I have reprised the un-edited full live performance for the download album, IF I COULD DRESS LIKE CLIVE OWEN (SONGS FOR FILMS NOT YET MADE). Thanks for listening.
