SONSOROL FIELD TRIP Island Times. June, 20th, 2014. A group of Sonsorol residents and Civic Action Team (CAT) members headed by Governor Jacob Yangilmau travelled several hundred kilometers to Sonsorol State late last month. The group, which comprised of 36 persons, includes 10 members of the CAT beaded by OIC Capt. Jerrod McComb. The group sailed for Sonsorol aboard the catamaran Ryuma on May 19 and returned back to Koror on the 27th. Johnny Kintaro of the Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) also joined the trip as part of the implementation of a water project in the state funded by the European Union (EU). The group brought supplies for the residents of the 4 islands (Sonsorol, Fanna, Merir, and Pulo Anna). The four islands have a combined population of more than 40 residents. The supplies include household items and groceries like cooking oil, sugar, and rice. The ship also brought with it concrete blocks, cement, and other materials that were used for the building of the underground water cistern. The CAT, with the help of local residents, built the water cistern that will be used for storing water. Gov. Yangilmau said that he is very thankful to the CAT for lending help to the building of the water project and other assistance extended. The CAT through Capt. Jim Lam, the Team’s doctor, also provided free medicines and medical services to the islands’ residents. “We had a great time bringing supplies, working on the water project, and providing medical services to the people there,” the Governor said. He said that after work, they also took the time to go fishing and caught some very big fish. Sonsorol is known for large fish like Tuna and Wahoo. On the way home, the group brought along with them the students and teachers of the Sonsorol Elementary School. “We brought the students to Koror so they can join the various summer programs. As for the teachers, they need to attend trainings here,” Yangilmau informed. Some residents who need medical attention also joined the trip back to Koror. Trips to Sonsorol are done several times a year. Yangilmau said that the next trip is tentatively scheduled for September 15. The islands of the state of Sonsorol, together with the islands of Hatohobei, form the Southwest Islands of Palau. The state is subdivided into four municipalities, which correspond to the four individual islands (Fanna, Sonosrol, Merir, and Pulo Anna). Sonsorol is located several hundred kilometers from the main island of Koror.
