SONY CFD-S05 BOOMBOX REVIEW Part 1 Continued The perceived - TopicsExpress

SONY CFD-S05 BOOMBOX REVIEW Part 1 Continued The perceived loudness of the Sony CFD-S05 boombox will ultimately depend on numerous objective and subjective factors. The quality of the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s headphone amplifier and elite stereo speakers will play a crucial role in determining how loud the volume the Mega Bass boombox can be played back at through attached stereo headphones or during lengthy music sharing. Most portable audio devices such as an MP3 Player, compact disc player, cassette player or boombox have low-powered headphone amplifiers ranging between 5-15 mW designated impedance and stereo speakers rated at 1-2 Watts max. RMS output power (at 10% T.H.D.). Conversely, the headphone amplifiers found in component stereo equipment may be rated up to 500mW at selected impedance. A component stereo receiver’s power amp section may be rated at 200 Watts RMS or more at 8-ohms impedance (at 0.09% T.H.D.) and is much more powerful than the digital stereo power amplifier found in a Sony CFD-S05 boombox. A component stereo receiver can power stereo headphones with a much higher impedance rating of 70-300 ohms or greater more efficiently compared to a Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s 16-32 ohms built-in stereo headphone amp. A component stereo receiver or integrated amplifier uses a Full-Size .25-inch (6.3mm) Stereo Headphone Jack to deliver increased amplifier output power to home theater stereo headphones. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox uses a smaller 3.5mm (1/8”) Stereo Headphone Jack that can’t deliver the same amount of loudness as the ¼” Full-Size Headphone Jack found on its component stereo counterpart. A headphone driver’s sensitivity rating plays an important factor in loudness perception on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. Consumers should consider purchasing stereo headphones that are rated between 98-117db/mw on its driver sensitivity specification to achieve satisfying loudness levels on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox features two 3.25-inch (8 cm) full-range stereo speakers that are capable of producing excellent Mega Bass loudness in less than favorable operating conditions on a daily basis. Consumers that are looking for extra loudness to block out external unwanted environmental noise during private listening on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox will seek to purchase stereo headphones with a better than average sensitivity rating. The higher the sensitivity rating, the louder the headphones will play without the need to turn the Volume Control all the way up on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. Loudness perception of the Sony CFD-S05 boombox is subject to the limits of human hearing. Some customers can hear sound waves better than others. The hearing levels of all Sony patrons are just not the same. Some people will report that the Sony CFD-S05 boombox doesn’t play loudly enough from its stereo speakers or connected headphones while others will frustratingly opine that the boombox plays too loudly for their tastes when adjusting the Volume Controls. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can reproduce the entire frequency spectrum of human hearing. A headphone amplifier can be purchased to augment headphone loudness from the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack. Your choice of stereo headphones will greatly affect the sound and overall loudness that you experience during private listening on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. Principles of radio wave propagation, theories of psychoacoustics, the laws of physics, Windows Media Player file compression MP3 CD bit rates and the recording quality of the music being listened to will determine whether or not there is extremely loud playback from the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s stereo speakers and/or attached stereo headphones. You can purchase the Sony CFD-S05 boombox to augment your perception of loud volume across music or spoken word entertainment categories on the FM/AM bands, cassette and compact disc media. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox puts out excellent Mega Bass stereo sound from yesterday’s and today’s rock tracks, sad love songs, heavy metal, stadium rock anthems, guitar rock, psychedelic rock, folk rock, soul, grunge, lounge, country, reggae, disco, hip-hop, dubstep, punk rock, punk fusion and music associated with present club environment. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s stereo speakers will support the maximum volume permitted by the digital stereo power amplifier that is built-in to it. This means that damage will not occur to the stereo speakers if the boombox is played back at high volume. Sony has designed the boombox drivers to handle all of the amplifier output power of the system. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox will play at loud volume for an extended period of time and produce prodigious well-defined bass through its stereo speakers. The sound may become distorted if the boombox is played back at excessive volume. I can’t recommend that you begin playback at high volume to avoid distortion and/or “clipping” of the amplifier and speakers. The volume should begin at a moderate level and be increased gradually to suit your needs to enhance the longevity of your Sony CFD-S05 boombox. The loudness of a boombox speaker system will depend on the amount of amplifier output measured in Watts, the quality of the system’s speakers, the type of materials that are used to make the drivers, the sensitivity rating of the drivers, number of speakers included with the boombox and the acoustic properties of the room that the Sony CFD-S05 boombox is placed in. Boombox manufacturers do not provide a “loudness” specification measured in decibels in the operating instructions, marketing specifications or service manuals of their portable stereos. You have to purchase a sound pressure level meter from RadioShack to get a digital readout of the sound level when the Sony CFD-S05 boombox is playing back a music source. Individual results for sound pressure level measurements will vary from location to location of the portable stereo and volume level of the Sony CFD-S05 boombox as it is adjusted up or down. For any boombox sold by Sony, the higher the amplifier output rating, the perceived loudness and clarity of sound from the Sony CFD-S05 boombox will be increased. A Sony CFD-S05 boombox rated at 3.4 Watts (RMS at 10% T.H.D.) of discrete amplifier output power will play much louder than a 1-2 Watt (RMS at 10% T.H.D.) max. rated boombox. A low-powered 1W boombox will play loud enough for a small home office or provide suitable volume for background music at a dinner party. However, if you desire a boombox that will fill your home with earthshaking bass and high quality vocals for a party, then you will need a Sony CFD-S05 boombox with an elite Mega Bass 2-speaker powered setup. I always recommend purchasing the highest wattage Sony boombox available at the time in your budget as long as you have the right amount of physical space to accommodate its placement in the room. A Sony CFD-S05 boombox offers the best Mega Bass sound, performance, features and value for your money compared to other similarly situated competitor boomboxes on the market today. A higher wattage Sony CFD-S05 boombox plays music clearly and with more bass at any volume than lower powered competing boombox stereos. There are several benefits to reducing the volume on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. 1. Sound leakage through stereo headphones is greatly reduced. Customers may find this option attractive during extended private listening sessions indoors or outdoors to avoid annoying people with music they don’t like that are sitting and standing next to them. 2. Customers can hear external sounds in their immediate surrounding environment such as traffic noise much better while wearing stereo headphones with the music playing at the same time. 3. Volume attenuation on a consistent basis promotes hearing safety for all Sony CFD-S05 boombox customers at all times. When the Volume Control is turned all the way up, the user winds up blasting loud music directly in his/her eardrums for seemingly endless hours upon hours on a daily basis. As a result, the customer’s long-term hearing health is not protected against irreversible hearing damage from unmitigated, unintended and abrupt changes in volume during audio disc, cassette or radio playback. Human hearing adapts easily to excessively loud playback. Because customers become very comfortable with loud volume quickly, they can potentially damage their hearing over time without being cognizant of this fact. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s volume should be reduced during public or private listening to prevent this undesirable hearing loss outcome so that Sony can keep its customers listening to Sony boomboxes for a lifetime. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can transfer cassette recordings to your personal computer in compressed .WAV and/or .MP3 digital file formats for personal archival purposes. Because Sony does not provide the requisite sound recording/editing software to complete this digital file transfer task the quality of transferred recordings from the Sony CFD-S05 boombox can’t be guaranteed by the manufacturer. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not have a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 Output Port to connect to a corresponding USB 2.0 or 3.0 Input Port on a PC or Mac to transfer cassette music recordings to a computer in the .MP3 or .WAV file compression formats. You need either a 3.5mm-male-to-3.5mm-male stereo patch cable (Dynex DX-MP35B) or a 3.5mm-male-to-dual RCA phono plug Y-audio cable (Dynex DX-MP3RCA7) to connect the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack to a 3.5mm or RCA Stereo Line Input Jack on your desktop, laptop or all-in-one computer. Alternatively, you can connect the Sony CFD-S05 boombox to your computer with a 3.5mm-to-USB audio adapter such as the Logitech USB to 3.5mm Audio Jack Adapter. You need a sound recording/editing software program that is already installed on your computer like Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder or a sound editing program such as Audacity 2.0.5 (or current version) or Sound Recorder 2.1 Mac (or current version) that can be downloaded from the internet for free to your computer to begin the tape-to-computer transfer process. You must power on your computer, open the sound editing software once the operating system is completely loaded, insert a prerecorded or homemade normal bias cassette into the Sony CFD-S05 boombox, press the TAPE button on the portable stereo to power on the unit, press the cassette player’s Play button and click the Record button in the sound editing software at the same time to start the tape transfer process to your computer in a compressed digital file format of your choice. It may be necessary to select the 3.5mm/RCA Line Input Jack on the computer as the recording source in the sound editing software prior to recording. You must type and save a file name for your new recording. Press the Stop button on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox to end the tape-to-computer recording process. You may need to download a LAME MP3 encoding v.3.99.3 (or current version) plug-in for the Audacity software to transfer music from the Sony CFD-S05 boombox in the MP3 file format to your computer. The transferred music from the Sony CFD-S05 boombox can be burned to an audio CD-R/RW disc on your computer once the cassette file transfer is completed. There are differences between the Sony CFD-S05 boombox and component shelf system categories with respect to compatible power sources and features. The differences between these two categories are: A shelf system can’t accept alkaline batteries as a direct current power source. Stereo shelf systems can only be powered by AC current. A boombox is the correct category for a complete, self-contained audio system that can be powered by C batteries or AC power. A boombox is a portable stereo that features a Digital FM/AM Tuner, CD Player, Cassette Player/Recorder, Full-Range Stereo Speakers, digital stereo power amplifier, digital stereo headphone amplifier, carry handle, telescopic whip FM antenna, telescopic antenna placement holder, ferrite bar AM Band antenna, the ability to run off batteries or AC power, auto-switching AC/DC power supply, detachable polarized plug AC power cord and its lightweight. Boomboxes can have a range in weight from two pounds to over thirty pounds. Shelf systems can range in weight from a few pounds to approximately 80 pounds. Most boomboxes feature an iPod dock or a 1/8” Auxiliary Input Jack to accommodate the world’s most popular MP3 Player. The distinguishing hallmark of a Sony CFD-S05 boombox is that it can be taken almost anywhere indoors or outdoors for your listening pleasure. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can be powered by C batteries to achieve that goal. The better performing boomboxes are powered by C batteries and a large number of them to accommodate their more powerful amplifiers. High-performance boomboxes feature a 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack, program, shuffle, repeat, and resume CD playback modes, digital LCD, Red LED OPR/BATT life indicator and Mega Bass sound for deep bass. The compact shelf system does not qualify as a boombox because it can’t be powered by batteries and is far too large and heavy to be considered portable. The shelf system is designed to be used in the home exclusively and can only be powered by AC current. Shelf systems have more audio/video inputs to connect components to the home stereo. For example, customers can connect their TV, DVD Player, computer, VCR, turntable, HD radio tuner, cassette player, MP3 Player and/or gaming system to their shelf system for audio playback of these components through the shelf system stereo speakers. However, the boombox product category only has one 3.5mm Audio Input Jack for connection to an MP3 Player. Shelf systems have antenna inputs for attachment to external amplified antennas for improved FM/AM reception. Boomboxes rarely feature antenna inputs and are limited to the built-in FM telescopic and AM ferrite bar antennas for local market radio reception. Many shelf systems offer multiple disc CD changers for uninterrupted music listening during a dinner party. Select component shelf systems include a built-in timer to enable time-shift recording of programs from the cassette recorder off the FM/AM tuner. Boomboxes are limited to single-disc CD playback. Shelf systems include multi-speaker setups with a dedicated subwoofer. The boombox category is usually limited to a two speaker arrangement. High-end shelf systems feature a DVD Player, large 7-8 inch LCD viewing display and can output surround sound to accommodate the dynamic movie soundtrack. The shelf system offers much more amplifier output power than the vast majority of boomboxes on the market today. Boomboxes can offer anywhere between 1 Watt to 100 Watts (RMS) of total amplifier power. Shelf systems can range between 10 Watts to 3000 Watts of RMS measured amplifier output power. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can record TV audio on cassette. A Y-audio stereo patch cable is needed to connect the RCA Stereo Line Output or RCA Stereo Variable Audio Output Jack on the TV to the 3.5mm AUX IN Jack on the Sony S05 boombox. Alternatively a 3.5mm stereo patch cable is required to make this connection if your TV has a 3.5mm Stereo Line Output Mini Jack. If the 3.5mm/RCA Stereo Line Output Jack on the back of the TV is already connected to a different audio/video component then you can connect the RCA Stereo Line Output Jack on a cable box or satellite set-top converter box to the 3.5mm AUX Input Jack on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox with a standard Y-audio stereo cable. Make sure the Sony CFD-S05 boombox is plugged into a wall outlet to conserve C battery power during recording. Press and hold the Power button to turn on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. Press the Audio In button on the unit. “AU IN” now appears in the LCD. Insert a blank normal bias 30, 60 or 90-minute cassette into the cassette compartment. Close the cassette door. Power on the TV. Tune to the channel that you wish to record audio from. Press the Record button on the cassette player to begin recording. Press Pause on the cassette player to temporarily suspend recording TV channel audio. Press the Pause button again to resume recording TV audio. Press Stop on the cassette player to end TV audio recording immediately. I can’t recommend the Sony CFD-S05 boombox for a prison system that prohibits recording devices. The recording function built-in to the single cassette deck can’t be disabled prior to shipment by the manufacturer. The operating instructions do not provide any information to disable cassette deck recording on Type I normal bias cassettes. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not have a built-in condenser microphone or a 3.5mm Microphone Input Jack. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can’t record the human voice or sound from the surrounding environment on cassette. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can’t be upgraded internally to accommodate a connection to an external microphone for any recording purpose. You can prevent recording on a cassette by breaking off its record tab with a small tool, finger or any other suitable instrument. Recording on a disabled cassette can be re-enabled by placing a piece of adhesive tape over the broken record tab. The cassette deck can erase recordings that the customer has created on this Sony CFD-S05 boombox. Recording operations can be performed on battery power or AC power with the power cord. If you remove the 6 C alkaline batteries from the battery compartment and unplug the AC power cord from the portable stereo at the same time the Sony CFD-S05 boombox will fail to power on. I think this is an undesirable result regardless of the issues presented with respect to boombox use in a prison. I can’t support any effort by the end user to intentionally disable standard cassette recording as such an event would void the manufacturer’s warranty on this portable audio product. Instead, you can purchase a super bass producing boombox with equivalent performance, features and value to the Sony CFD-S05 boombox that does not include a built-in recording function for recreational operation in a prison. You can purchase a JVC Kaboom Boombox RV-NB70B for your needs. The JVC Kaboom box features earthshaking 40 Watts (RMS) amplifier output power, discrete 4 amplifier arrangement, twin side mounted 5-1/8 inch Super Woofers to bring out the best in today’s club music scene, bass reflex speaker system, two Super Woofer ducts to establish deep bass sound, two 3-3/16-inch stereo drivers for powerful stereo sound, state-of-the-art low bass frequency enhancement circuitry, Digital FM Tuner for listening to the latest music, news, sports or weather forecasts, iPod/iPhone dock with protective door for robust MP3 file playback from an iTunes library, USB 2.0 Host Port playback of compatible USB flash drives, multimedia card readers and consumer-grade HDD, single-disc CD Player provides audio book playback on demand, 30 Track Programmable CD Player, repeat and shuffle play CD playback modes, MP3 CD Playback, CD-R/RW Playback, .WMA File Audio CD Playback, .WAV File Audio CD Playback, DivX media file playback, 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack, built-in guitar/microphone amplifier, guitar/microphone mixing option, guitar/ microphone level control, karaoke sing-along entertainment, Composite Video Output Jack, 3.5mm Line Input Jack for connection to portable audio devices such as a Smartphone or MP3 Player, wireless IR remote control, shoulder strap for enhanced portability, cylindrical chassis, clock, preset timer, sleep timer, 4 Sound Modes, 15 lbs. total weight, one year parts and labor limited manufacturer warranty and the JVC unit can be operated on 10 1.5V D cell alkaline batteries or AC power with the supplied AC power cord. The USB 2.0 Port that is included on the JVC RV-NB70B Kaboom boombox does not feature any recording capability. The JVC RV-NB70B Kaboom boombox does not have a built-in cassette deck to enable recording from its 3.5mm Microphone Input Jack. Additionally, you can purchase the Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy Duty CD Boombox for this non-recording prison use portable audio application. The Sony ZS-H10CP Personal Audio System features a high output power Mega Bass sound for exemplary music reproduction anywhere at any time. The Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy Duty CD Boombox has an industrial footprint, rugged ABS plastic construction for demanding indoor and outdoor usage, single-disc CD Player with integrated ESP2 anti-shock protection to prevent disc skipping, 1-bit D/A converter, MP3 CD Playback, ID3 tag format display, CD-R/RW Playback, program, shuffle, repeat and resume disc playback modes, Digital FM Stereo/AM Dual Band Tuner, backlit 4 line dot matrix LCD, digital LCD, 360 degree rotational telescopic FM whip antenna, ferrite bar AM Band antenna, 30 Total FM/AM Station Presets, 20 FM Band Stereo Presets, 10 AM Band Mono Presets, 3.5mm Line Input Jack for connection to an MP3 Player, iPod, iPhone or Zune MP3 Player, Audio In Access button, detachable battery cover, 6 D battery operation, 9V DC IN Jack, 9V AC/DC Wall Wart Power Adapter, auto-switching AC/DC power supply, airtight CD compartment, water, dust and dirt resistant design, rubberized controls, seals, gaskets and bushings to prevent water infiltration, 4.6W digital stereo power amplifier at 10% T.H.D., 0-10 volume scale, 30-step Volume Control, large Jog Dial Volume Knob, two robust 4-inch (10 cm) full-range stereo drivers, two bass reflex ports, protective metal speaker guards, vibrant red system color scheme, 14 lbs. total system weight, built-in carry handle, digital stereo headphone amplifier, 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack provides convenient private listening, hexagon-shaped chassis, vast network of case screws to secure critical boombox components and bass reflex speakers for prodigious sound with MP3 file playback in tough operating environments. The Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy Duty CD Boombox does not have any built-in recording devices or recording capability. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does offer some control of the bass and treble output but these frequency ranges can’t be controlled with pinpoint precision. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox offers a wide directional 2-way 3.25-inch speaker system with Mega Bass sound. The boombox has a Mega Bass ON/OFF button to tailor the low end sound to your needs. When the Mega Bass feature is in the “ON” position, the low bass frequencies are increased to meet the demands of today’s rock and club music scene. The Mega Bass feature can be turned “OFF” to decrease bass output when the unit is being played as background music for a birthday party or other entertainment event. The treble range, where most vocal and high-pitched instrument reproduction resides, can be increased or decreased as the system volume is raised or lowered. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not have custom and/or preset equalizer sound modes to adjust bass, midrange and treble frequencies in a manner that is precisely consistent with the acoustic properties of the room that the boombox is placed in. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not provide support for continuous or auto-reverse playback of Type I normal bias cassettes. The cassette must be ejected and then turned over by hand to play the next side. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox offers a full auto stop when Side A or Side B reaches the end in play mode to avoid wear and tear on the tape mechanism and to conserve battery power. Continuous or relay play is achieved on a boombox or component stereo cassette deck that features twin cassette players with an auto-reverse capable tape direction switch controlling the action. Continuous play stereo components feature full-logic cassette transport controls, multiple tape transport motors, high-speed dubbing and a digital tape counter to keep track of current tape position. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not have the second cassette player necessary to achieve continuous play. Sony does make speaker and alarm clock docking stations for their own Sony Walkman MP3 Players. However, the Sony CFD-S05 boombox is a better choice for your Sony portable music player playback needs. The Sony Speaker Docks are not portable solutions for music playback. The Sony Walkman Speaker Docks can’t accept batteries as a DC power source. As a result, the Sony Walkman Docking Station can’t be taken to the same number of outdoor venues as the Sony CFD-S05 boombox for superlative mobile audio performance. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox offers elite sound for FM/AM stations, compact discs, cassettes and today’s most popular MP3 Players that a Sony Walkman MP3 Player Docking Station can’t match. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not have a microphone jack or built-in microphone. You can’t connect a microphone to the portable stereo directly and record your own voice or your students’ voices. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox was not made to be used in a commercial or educational setting. Nonetheless, a professional educator can still purchase a boombox that will meet classroom recording needs. You can purchase a Hamilton Boombox Model: MPC-6060 Radio/CD/Cassette Player/Recorder for classroom recording. The Hamilton boombox features an external microphone jack, built-in condenser microphone and a dual cassette deck recorder for classroom recording activities. I can’t recommend external speakers with the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. The Sony boombox does not offer external speaker terminals. The boombox does have a Stereo Headphone Jack that you could connect to powered speakers with a 3.5mm Line Input Jack but this would disable the portable stereo’s speaker system. I don’t think that this is a desirable result. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox offers excellent sound through its built-in Mega Bass speakers and an external speaker system is not necessary to achieve satisfactory sound. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox is capable of voice recording or karaoke playback duties with the purchase of additional aftermarket accessories. You need to purchase a portable microphone mixer and compatible microphone to add voice recording functionality to the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. You must connect the RCA Stereo Line Output Jack on the battery operated microphone mixer to the 3.5mm AUX Line Input Jack on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox with a Y-audio stereo patch cable. Install a 9V alkaline or lithium battery into the portable microphone mixer’s rear panel battery compartment. Next, connect a microphone featuring a .25-inch mini plug connector or UniMatch Mini Plug Adapter to the Microphone Input Jack 1 on the third party microphone mixer. Press the Power Switch on the microphone mixer to the ON position. Adjust the microphone mixer’s Channel 1 Slider Control to move the volume output level to 6-10. Adjust the Mono/Stereo Switch on the microphone mixer to the correct position depending on the type of mono or stereo microphone attached to it. Press the Power button on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox to turn it on. Press the Audio In button on the portable stereo to select the microphone mixer as the recording source for the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. “AU IN” now appears in the boombox’s LCD display. Insert a blank Type I normal bias cassette into the tape deck. Press the REC button on the cassette player as you speak into the microphone that is connected to the microphone mixer. Press the Pause button to temporarily suspend voice recording. Press the Pause button again to continue voice recording. Press Stop to discontinue voice recording operations immediately on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. I recommend any of the following accessories for this voice recording application: 1. RadioShack 4-Channel Stereo Microphone Mixer Model: 3200029 |Catalog #:32-029, 2. Sony Omnidirectional Dynamic Vocal Mic F-V100, 3. Sony Unidirectional Dynamic Vocal Mic F-V220, 4. Unidirectional Dynamic Microphone Model: AVL516 | Catalog #: 33-3038 and 5. Dynex 7’ Y-Audio Cable Model: DX-MP3RCA7. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s 3.5mm AUX Line Input Jack can be connected to any Karaoke USA Portable Machine that features an RCA Stereo or 3.5mm Line Output Jack with a Y-audio cable or 3.5mm-male-to-3.5mm-male stereo patch cable. You must select the Audio In Jack on the boombox to hear audio from the Karaoke System on the portable stereo’s bass reflex speakers. The built-in FM/AM Tuner can’t be upgraded to HD sound. Nevertheless, an external FM HD Radio Tuner can be added on to the Sony CFD-S05 Personal Audio System’s 3.5mm Stereo Line Input Jack. I recommend the following portable FM Band HD Radio Tuner’s for this on-the-go digital radio upgrade: Insignia NS-HD01, Insignia NS-HD01A, Insignia NS-HD02, Insignia NS-HDRAD and Coby HDR650. HD radio provides many benefits to consumers including dramatically increased audio fidelity on FM/AM radio stations, wide dynamic range FM stereo sound, digital AM stereo sound on the FM HD radio sub-channels, live HD broadcasts of local professional sports teams, multiple simultaneous news, talk and music program feeds on many different FM HD1, HD2 and HD3 broadcast channels, auto HD/analog reception mode switching, broadcast HD logo on HD radio programs, HD radio signal strength meter, instant station frequency, artist info, song title, album info, album cover art and call sign FM station identification, iTunes tagging, live pause, bookmark feature, reduced multipath noise distortion artifacts, virtual elimination of noise, static, hissing, popping, fading and birdie sounds often found on conventional AM radio transmissions and real-time news, weather and traffic reports. The subscription free over-the-air HD broadcast signal does not provide extended reception coverage to geographical locations that are normally impossible to obtain high quality analog radio reception in. F.C.C. licensed HD radio transmissions are broadcast alongside their traditional analog counterpart. An HD radio receiver reverts back to analog transmissions when the broadcast digital signal is weak, obstructed or lost due to a poor reception area. A portable FM HD radio receiver that is connected to the Sony CFD-S05 boombox is not likely to obtain better long-range FM reception compared to this portable stereo’s integrated FM Stereo/AM Tuner. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox operating instructions are divided into the following subject matter headings for compartmentalized information retrieval: Owner’s Record, Warning, Note on Dual Discs, Music discs encoded with copyright protection technologies, Limited Warranty, Caution, Note, Caution, For customers in the USA, Important Safety Instructions, Power Sources, Specifications, Audio Power Specifications, Other Specifications, CD player section, Radio section, Cassette-corder section, General, Optional Accessory, Precautions, Discs that this unit can play, Discs that this unit cannot play, Notes on discs, On safety, On power sources, On placement, On operation, Notes on cassettes, Cleaning the cabinet, Basic Operations, Before using the unit, To turn on/off the power, Note, To adjust the volume, To listen through headphones, To reinforce the bass sound, Playing a CD, Tips, Listening to the radio, Playing a tape, Recording on a tape, Tips, Other Operations, Using the display, To check the total track number and playing time of the CD, To check the current track number of the CD, To check the current preset station number of the radio, Selecting a CD play mode, To cancel the selected play mode, To check the programmed track and playing order in the display, To change the current program, Tips, Presetting radio stations, If a station cannot be preset automatically, Tip, Playing preset radio stations, Connecting optional components, Tip, Troubleshooting, General, The power is not on, There is no audio, Noise is heard, CD player, The CD does not play or “Cd--“ is displayed even when a CD is in place, The sound drops out, Radio, Reception is poor, The audio is weak or has poor quality, The picture of your TV becomes unstable, Tape player, The tape does not move when you press an operation button, The record button does not function or the tape does not play or record, and Poor or distorted playback, recording or erasing quality. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not have a speaker balance control to use with split-track CDs. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox was not designed to play split-track compact discs or cassettes for band practice. You must purchase a boombox that was specifically designed for music, dance and educational instruction for this application. You can purchase a Califone Model 2455AV-03 Performer Plus Multimedia Recorder for your musical instruction. The Califone boombox features a speaker balance control, dual cassette decks, CD Player, CD-R Playback, MP3 CD Playback, microphone, 6 3.5mm Headphone Jacks, PA system capabilities and rugged ABS plastic construction to withstand the rigors of classroom and general outdoor use. The Califone boombox is significantly more expensive than the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. There is no information contained in the operating instructions that supports habitual long-term outdoor use for advanced mobile audio applications. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox does not feature water-resistant or waterproof construction. This boombox is suitable to go outside to entertain customers on the patio, apartment balcony, at the outdoor gym, for dance instruction at dance class or on a tool cart while making repairs on the car during a late summer afternoon. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox can be taken to the beach or boardwalk in the summertime but this item should not be exposed to the direct rays of the sun for an extended period of time. Excessive exposure to sun rays at the beach or in a parked car with the windows closed on a clear summer day should be avoided to prevent heat related damage to critical internal boombox components. The operating instructions indicate that this boombox should not be subjected to excessive amounts of water splashing, water infiltration inside cabinet openings, dust or sand infiltration, product drop to the ground and severe mechanical shock. The operating instructions suggest that the Sony CFD-S05 boombox should not be placed on an unstable surface and customers should not obstruct ventilation openings in the casing to prevent overheating. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox may suffer cosmetic scratches, dents or blemishes and the casing may become soiled when it is exposed to the outdoor elements on a consistent basis. Regrettably any of the above mentioned incidents that may occur while the stereo is located outdoors could cause damage, operation error or complete malfunction to the Sony CFD-S05 boombox. Such product abuse may not be covered by the manufacturer’s factory warranty that provides reasonable protections to consumers against product defects that occur during normal usage. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox should always be kept indoors during severe inclement weather. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s maximum lifespan will only occur when it is used exclusively at home or in a secure indoor location. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox should not be exposed to extremely cold temperatures for any extended period of time to prevent disruption of compact disc playback. There are many benefits to using the Sony CFD-S05 boombox exclusively indoors that include: substantially increased product longevity, class leading sound, impressive low bass performance for the boombox category and consumers can expect to conserve battery power by plugging it into an available wall outlet, power strip or surge protector. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox is compatible with a battery powered FM transmitter for MP3 Player portable audio wireless playback. You can play audio from an MP3 Player or TV set on the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s stereo speakers via a user selectable unused FM radio station frequency with a FM transmitter connected to your MP3 Player’s 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack. A portable AAA battery operated FM transmitter with a 3.5mm Line Input Jack is compatible with the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s Digital FM Band Tuner. I recommend a Maxell P-13 Universal Digital FM Stereo Transmitter for MP3 Player wireless audio playback. The Sony CFD-S05 boombox cant record on CD. The Sony boombox does not have a built-in CD burner. Sony does not sell any boombox with compact disc burning. Mass market boomboxes have never been able to record on shiny discs or any other CD recordable media. When the boombox era began circa late 1970s and early 1980s, cassette playback and recording was a dominant form of portable music entertainment for a large number of American households. Nothing much has changed in recording technology built into the portable stereo since mass production of boomboxes began. A competing Sony boombox product can be purchased to compensate for the Sony CFD-S05 boombox’s absence of MP3 CD Playback. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Boombox is the ultimate fit for your MP3 CD and MP3 digital music player playback needs indoors or outdoors.
