SORTING OUT PROFESSIONAL PRIORITIES (A New Year Message from the AAIF President) 1. AS A MODEL CITIZEN-ARCHITECT a) always uphold PUBLIC INTEREST ABOVE ALL ELSE e.g. the road right-of-way (RROW or street and all its parts) and the mandated legal easements (LEs) along waterways are all key components of the PUBLIC DOMAIN; these are NOT for private use NOR enjoyment; if Your client asks You to apportion or fence/ wall in any part of the RROW or the LE, just say NO as it does NOT form part of private property; if the Client asks You to violate the law, just say NO (politely, if You can manage); if the Client persists in violating the law through You, walking away from the project/ client is always a later option; lastly, do not forget to pay taxes - it is Your duty, particularly if You were educated by the State at some point in Your academic life, and Your main way of aiding the State in getting its work done; and b) always uphold CLIENT INTEREST ABOVE YOUR OWN i.e. You are the authority on professional matters (pertaining to the planning/ design/ execution of a building and its grounds) and being the Client’s representative, the Client has supposedly reposed full trust in Your capability as a professional; remember that Your professional service is a form of PUBLIC SERVICE and Your professional registration and license is an accepted form of CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY; the Client commissioned You for professional advice/ services, so be ready with it but do NOT succumb to the temptation of taking advantage of the Client’s trust/ confidence or lack of knowledge in what You do. 2. AS A MEMBER AND STAKEHOLDER OF THE PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECTURAL COMMUNITY a) always uphold the INTEREST OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSION ABOVE ALL ELSE i.e. the interest of the architectural profession (composed of both natural AND JURIDICAL ENTITIES) is SUPREME as compared to the interests of any/ Your professional organization (PO), Your office/ group practice or Your individual practice; this means subjugating such LOWER professional interests to the HIGHER INTERESTS OF ADVANCING THE PROFESSION at every turn; this also means taking every effort to disseminate information on/ appreciate/ understand/ apply/ satisfy/ comply as much as possible with (and if necessary and depending on Your capabilities, to DEFEND against ALL detractors, even if they unfortunately also happen to be other Architects and/or other POs of Architects), the main “Bibles” of architectural practice on Philippine soil i.e. R.A. No. 9266, the Architecture Act of 2004 and P.D. No. 1096, the 1977 National Building Code of the Philippines/ NBCP, and all of their derivative and related rules and regulations; and b) SHARE Your knowledge or expertise or skills or any useful information for the betterment of the ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSION in the Philippines/ overseas i.e. be an actual and/or virtual MENTOR-architect at every opportunity by SHARING the new/ past knowledge gained as SHARING is a key way of IMPROVING such knowledge i.e. so that other persons with qualified knowledge of architecture and allied services can also study/ apply/ refine such SHARED knowledge. Thank You.
