SOURCE ARETUSA, Ortigia (Sr) Arethusa was a nymph of Diana after which he spent his days running free in the woods of the Peloponnese, hunting animals and picking flowers. During a hunting expedition departed too far from the group of maidens in the wake of Diana and arrived alone in front of the shores of the river Alpheus. Arethusa, enticed perhaps by not being seen and the oppressive heat, he took off his white robes and plunged. He soon, however, feel that towards the middle of the river, the water around her began to tremble and to form vortices almost dancing. Disturbed by these feelings he tried to get out hurriedly from the water, but it was at that moment that the river Alpheus turned into a beautiful young blond who, lifting his head out of the water, he showed himself to the nymph Arethusa, with the eyes of a lover . The nymph, however, taken by the break managed to break free and reach the shore with great effort, he fled naked and dripping. Alpheus also came out with a feline leap from its river and chased. Arethusa, for fear of being reached, churches protection to Diana that first enveloped in a mysterious fog and hid at the sight of Alpheus, then turned her into a spring and brought in Sicily, Syracuse, near the island of Ortigia . Alpheus in the midst of the mist thus lost sight of its beautiful nymph. Alpheus realized the miracle and was so in love that overflowed with love. The gods took pity on it and the almighty Zeus allowed him to reach his beloved; Alpheus had to make a great effort, dug a basement under the Ionian Sea, and from the Peloponnese, came out great in the Port of Syracuse, resulting in the vicinity of the beloved source, lapping waters with her. Today this source of fresh water flows at a few meters from the sea, on the island of Ortigia in Syracuse. It forms a small semicircular pond full of fish and where the green triumphs and thrives the papyrus plant, in fact, to local tradition, is also called a king funtana papyri.
