SOUTH SUDAN A deadline for the deadline Regional officials are finally running out of patience with obfuscation from both warring parties and could impose sanctions next month. This time the deadline for a peace and power-sharing agreement is serious, runs the message from regional and international officials. On 25 August, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which is mediating between government and rebels, gave the warring parties 45 days to settle before imposing sanctions. The balance of opinion in IGAD has tilted towards President Salva Kiir Mayardits government and is more sceptical about Riek Machar Teny Dhurgons position. This means that the most frenetic manoeuvring is among oppositionists, both armed and unarmed. Some of Rieks supporters say privately that the former Vice-Presidents group is far readier to compromise than it appears.
