SOUTH SUDANIAN MINISTER CHARGES YOUTHS ON EXPLORATION OF BROADBAND TECHNOLOGY The Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, South Sudan, Hon. Rebecca JosuahOkwaci has called on the youths in Africa to embrace and explore the initiative of broadband technology in the world. Okwaci, who yesterday made the call in Abuja during a chat with Nigerian Telecomnews, noted that the state of broadband development in Africa today, has helped citizens of CTO nations in the continent to see themselves where they are today; from analogue to digital. According to her, “Our youths in Africa should engage their brains, their minds and their knowledge to develop this initiative. It has helped to take us where we are today from analogue to digital. And I see for ICT, there is a lot for us to think of. I would like to encourage the young people of Africa, as well as all women also, that there are still fertile lands for us to think of innovations, and as we move forward, the sky is the limit. Let us continue to think of how to improve our society, how to educate our people, and how to use the broadband technology in ICT as field knowledge for taking our countries ahead, and not only for job creation. It is important for job creation, but it is also important for our economic growth.” While Acknowledging the just concluded 11th Commonwealth Telecommunications Organizations Forum, hosted by Nigeria, Okwaci said, “There is a lot I am presently disusing with the republic of South Sudan, and as a new Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services, I have already seen a program like the 2013 annual CTO forum in Nigeria for me and I have seen around some innovations that must be acquainted with.” Also, speaking on the Level of broadband penetration in the Republic of South Sudan, the minister said her country was still far behind, but putting measures in place to salvage he situation. “I am sure you are aware that the Republic of South Sudan was born in 2011, and only yesterday, so, as I speak to you, we are the baby of Africa, bouncing and kicking baby in Africa. We still have challenges in terms of technology, but we are not alone, we are happy that today we have experiences that we are learning from Nigeria. We would move very fast. We already have our cyberspace, we are also working on our fibre connection, and this is to realise that very soon we are own our own regulating our resources.” The minister acknowledged that kind of information available to her country by Nigeria will attain a level of technology in the Republic of South Sudan. “As we connect with our fibres, our enabling countries are there to take us to the cable. So, I am very hopeful that, as soon as we finish the Sudanian connections, then we would be able to go to the table and see it will help us to improve on our broadband. That will definitely bring a lot of hub into South Sudan”, she said.
