SOVIET SHIP RED OCTOBER IN CC (Russian: Красный Oктябрь, Krasniy Oktyabr) If youre a reader, you are probably familiar with Tom Clancys 1984 novel, Hunt for Red October. Even if you dont read, you surely saw the great 1990 film of the same name, based on the book. Red October, of course, was the name of a fictional Soviet submarine, equipped with top secret stealth propulsion. The hunt for this dangerous warship was critical to U.S. security and provided the plot for this naval thriller. In truth, there actually WAS a Soviet ship named Red October, and in December 1972 it was the first Soviet ship to dock in the Port of Corpus Christi. Despite the fact that the Cold War with the Soviet Union was still raging in 1972, a deal was made to sell 440 million bushels of grain to the Soviets.....and the Red October was in Corpus to pick up a portion of it. Not as exciting as the movie, but an interesting part of Port history. Shown below are the ship and the ships Captain (on the left)
