SP approves tricycle fare reduction in Dumaguete-VDS NEWS DUMAGUETE CITY-The Dumaguete Sangguniang Panlungsod approved the lowering of fares, from P8.50 to P6.50 for each passenger of motorcabs-for-hire, or pedicabs and tricycles, in Dumaguete City, after retail prices of petroleum products were reduced. The resolution adjusted the fare, authored by Councilor Nilo Sayson, was approved Wednesday after retail pump prices in Dumaguete dropped to as low as P29.70 per liter for diesel, P38.32 for unleaded gas, and P38.67 for premium gas. A public hearing was also held to get the consensus of the riding public, and the operators and drivers of pedicabs. Sayson, chairman of the SP Committee on Transportation, said the fare rate adjustment should be strictly implemented under Section 1 of City Ordinance 177 series of 2007, that sets the automatic fare rates based on the prices of petroleum products, without prejudice to other possible amendments. Eddie Lazaro of the ND Motor Piston Dumaguete transport group did not raise any objection to the fare rate adjustment during the public hearing, but later announced that they are opposing the move. In a meeting Wednesday evening, he said that members and leaders of the transport group bucked the fare rate adjustment as it was disadvantageous to them and cited maintenance costs and prices of spare parts, among others. The fare adjustment was approved by Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria.
