SPANOVIC AND BEKRIC BALKAN AOYs, by Alfons Juck, EME News YEREVAN (ARM): Serbia celebrated both male and female Balkan Athletes of the Year 2013 at the 3rd Balkan Athletics Gala in Armenia. Both won bronze medals at the World Championships in Moscow, long jumper Ivana Spanovic and 400 m hurdler Emir Bekric. Taken into account was the fact that both athletes also won the Balkan Championships in their events. That is why Croatian discus World champion Sandra Perkovic was not selected on top as she did not compete at the Balkan event. At the two previous Gala evenings the awards went to Ivet Lalova and Fatih Avan in 2011 and Asli Cakir with Asmir Kolasinac in 2012. During the event also new stars were awarded from the junior and youth categories. On the girls side World Youth Champions Turkish shot putter Emel Dereli and Romanian jumper Florentina Marincu. Among the boys Bosnian shot putter Mesud Pezer (European junior champion) and Croatian hammer thrower Matija Greguric who is World Youth Champion. Among the guests also IAAF Vice-President Sergey Bubka.
