SPECIAL SEMINAR THURSDAY, MAY 8 @ NOON: John Steinbeck, Ed Ricketts, and the Literary Beginnings of Marine Ecology by Keith R. Benson, Ph.D. Held in Boatworks Lecture Hall at Hopkins Marine Station. Trained as an historian of science, Keith Benson spent a career teaching at the University of Washington (22 years) and the University of British Columbia (5 years). Most of his research interests have focused on the history of American biology, with a particular interest in the history of marine biology and oceanography. Asked to describe the subject of his seminar this coming Thursday, May 8th, 2014 Keith Benson provided the following: This presentation is deeply rooted in my career, since my interest in Ed Ricketts began fifty years ago, an interest that continues to be nurtured through the history of marine biology and marine ecology. The early exposure to Ricketts was heavily influenced by his connection to John Steinbeck. More recent evaluations of Ricketts have caused me to evaluate his work in its own right and have led me to reconsider his contributions to the history of marine biology. Join us for this informal presentation by Keith R. Benson as we explore John Steinbeck, Ed Ricketts, and the literary beginnings of marine ecology and beyond.
