SPECULATION: For the Big Novel. Lets assume that from the 1950s-1960s, Flint had succeeded inannexing some of its inner ring suburbs. Lets say that it annexed the populous parts of Burton along Davison, Richfield, Fenton Roads and Saginaw Streets, Beecher as far north as Stanley Road, and subdivisions west of Clio Road and Ballenger Highway as far as Decker. This would have meant that Flints population was (very approximately) about 210,000 in 1980, 180,000 in 1990, 150,000 in 2000, and 135,000 in 2010. Major retail districts, like West Miller Road, Hill Road, and East Court would have remained outside of city limits. How would this have changed things, for good or ill, over the same period of time? How would it have impacted the balance of power in the county between Flint, charter townships, and incorporated township? How would it have impacted the racial politics of the region? What would have been the economic impacts? Im not looking for difinitive answers (and indeed, there arent any anyway; this is hypothetical). Im interested in good food for thought.
