SPEECH BY MR GAN THIAM POH, MP FOR PASIR RIS – PUNGGOL GRC FOR MEE TOH SPEECH DAY 2013 AND OFFICIAL OPENING OF SCHOOL MEDIA RESOURCE LIBRARY ON 5 JULY 2013, 8.15AM AT MEE TOH SCHOOL Principal, Mr Gau Poh Teck Vice Principals Mrs Chu-Tan Kim Yan, and Miss Kong Su May, School Management Committee members, Teachers, Students Ladies and Gentlemen Boys and Girls Good Morning! It is indeed an honour to be here this morning to attend the school’s speech day with all my young brothers and sisters. I graduated from Mee Toh School back in 1975, although the school had relocated, memories of my primary school days suddenly flooded my mind when I stepped into the school. We all spent six years for our primary education, and that is when we started to make friends, started to learn many valuable lessons in life, and how to be a good and responsible citizen. I always remember my alma mater. I clearly remembered how we are disciplined when we do not behave well in school, and that is why many of our parents enrolled us to Mee Toh school to learn the moral values and discipline. That was the main reason my parents sent me to Mee Toh School. It is all because of the good moral values the school inculcates in her students. Mee Toh means eternal brightness which illuminated our lives. I am proud to be a student of Mee Toh. I look forward to singing our school song along with the school choir which was formed earlier this year. Mee Toh School emphasizes on holistic education, especially in cognitive, physical, aesthetic, social and moral domains. The school is student-centric, and promotes values-driven education. When we come to school, we are not merely here to read or memorize books. Education is very important as it is the key to success. Prizes will be presented to students who not only excelled academically or in the aesthetics or sports, but also to students who lead by example and are good role models to fellow classmates and possess good characters and values. Partners Awards are also presented to parents for their commitments to the school, and alumni representatives for leading our Alumni Association and contributions for our alma mater. I congratulate Mdm Lee Whee Chin for her dedicated service to the school for the past many years. Mdm Lee is a member of the School Management Committee, and she truly deserves the “Service to Education” Award. Congratulations! I am also delighted to officiate the launch of the Media Resource Library which was newly renovated and specially redesigned to be a purposeful learning space for the students. The new library encourages students to appreciate the joy of learning, and also strives to develop Mee Toh-ians into lifelong learners. There is a difference between school and life. In school, our teachers teach us a lesson and then give us a test. But in life, we are given tests that taught us lessons. Study hard and learn from your teachers. They are there to share with you many experiences and valuable lessons they learnt in their lives, so you will be ready to face the challenges in the future. I would like to end my speech with a quote by Mahatma Gandhi. I quote: You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing, there will be no result. Study hard and I wish all of you every success! I am certain the school would continue to realize its vision to touch souls and challenging minds. Thank you!
