***SPF 30+ vs SPF 50+ ==> Make sure you know the odds before gambling with sun cancer*** We all know SPF 30+ is better than SPF 15+, so SPF 50+ should take the cake for skin protection, no? But who can honestly say they know what SPF even stands for, let alone what it measures (Im just as guilty as 99% of you out there until now ) For those of you who think SPF 50+ is the best thing since online streaming and youtube, regardless of the extra $$ READ ON..... SPF- sun protection factor is a lab measurement of the degree of UV protection and as all you science lovers (or informed haters) out there would know, unfortunately things in the lab are more complicated than they first seem. This means that the difference between 30+ and 50+ SPF protection is significantly less than it first seems (1.3% to be exact). In a nutshell, SPF 50+ blocks out 98% of UV rays whilst SPF 30+ holds back 96.7%, which all seems pretty straight forward....BUT (theres always one in science) this doesnt mean we can slack off on our slip slop slap repitions when whipping out the big 50+ SPF guns. BOTH SPF 30+ and SPF50+ NEED TO BE APPLIED EVERY 1-2 HOURS!!! The ONLY DIFFERENCE between the two is that you 50+ converts out there are batting off an extra 1.3% between applications than the 30+ sporters. SO NOW feel free to make an informed decision with how the numbers add up for you!
