SPIRIT SWORD DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, 23rd March, 2014. HAVE COURAGE Joshua was going to lead the people of God into the land of promise and one of the virtues he needed in order to succeed was courage. It was so important for Joshua to be courageous that after Moses had counselled him to be courageous, God Himself told Joshua three times in just one chapter: “Be strong and of a good courage” (Joshua 1:6, 9, 18). It is not possible to succeed in God without courage. And for this reason “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). There are people who are not able to attain purpose in life because of fear. The difference between where you are now and where you are supposed to be may not be due to the presence of obstacles but the absence of courage. Many journeys ended half way because the travellers were intimidated by certain false evidences which appeared real. This is the meaning of FEAR: False Evidences Appearing real. Some people run away from where God is taking them to because they lacked courage to confront the future. Courage is the lifeline for progress. That you are in God’s will does not imply there won’t be oppositions, but when courage is in place, you will overcome. It takes courage to preach sound word, stand for the truth, resist falsehood and speak against oppression. Without courage, you will find it hard to do God’s will. If you ever have a dream and purpose to fulfil, then you need courage. It takes courage to pursue God-given dreams and counsels. Esther needed courage to meet the king when it was not her turn and time. Once God saw her courage, He blessed her mission. God blesses courage. You can fast till tomorrow, until courage arises in your spirit, nothing changes. How do you then walk courageously? You must understand that courage is spiritual and genetic. If you are the son of the Lion of the tribe of Judah, you are also a ‘lion’ and by inheritance you have the spiritual gene of courage. And the Lion does not turn away from any (Proverbs 30:30). What you need is for it to be activated. How then do you activate the spiritual component of courage in you? (i) Boost your faith through God’s word. Locate God’s word that carry His promises concerning your situation. (ii) Look back at the things God did for you in the past (the testimonies and victories) and use them as catalysts for approaching anything standing before you. David said: “The LORD that delievered me out of the paw of the lion, and the out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37). It was not just the stone that brought Goliath down; it was courage! If there had been no courage, there would have been no stone in the first place. If you want to live well and end well, you need courage! TEXT: Deuteronomy 31:7
