SPOILERS AHEAD So, after finishing my re-watch of #TheWire, Ive decided it is not quite the greatest television show ever made, an honor which now probably falls to #BreakingBad. I havent watched The Wire in years, and I think the high esteem I held it in was due mainly to my rose-tinted memories of the early seasons. Dont get me wrong, either, the first three seasons are some of the greatest seasons of television ever made, and they hold up well, even though they were not shot in HD, because the writing is so sharp, and the premise so crisp. But after that, things kind of fall apart. Season 4 is good, especially the Pryzbylewski arc, but its not really the same show as the previous seasons. I mean, its a great show still, but its an entirely different narrative, you know? Season 5 is just a mess. It has some high points like Gus and the Baltimore Sun arc, but I dont care about Marlow Stanfield, not like I did about Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale. I dont believe in McNulty and Freamon sacrificing themselves like that. And if they really would, I dont buy them getting caught. But especially ... SPOILER ALERT ESPECIALLY ... I dont buy for one second the greatest anti-hero of all time, Omar Little, getting got by some little kid. Just, no. END SPOILER But anyway, season 1 is great, and season 3 is good except for the weirdness of Hamsterdam, but season 2 is probably the apex of the show. The Longshoreman Union arc, the Greeks, McNulty and Russell, the Barksdale crew, everything is rolling together so well, you just get lost in it. Storytelling at its best. Especially the episodes written by Ed Burns. Ill have a shot and a beer, and none of that protestant whisky.
