SPORTS INJURIES & SPORTS MEDICINE - Learn from The Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports - The Human body as a machine, using bony levers, is less than 25% efficient. In addition, more than one-half of the bodys total weight is located in the upper part of the body and is supported by rather narrow bones. The fact that humans are posturally in an upright position makes them prone to various kinds of conditions. For example, there is greater strain in the lumbar vertebral curve due to the weight of the abdominal viscera in the bipedal position as opposed to the quadruped position. The upright position also places a great deal of stress on the small surface area that the two feet provide. The Head, weighing close to 14 pounds, is balanced almost precariously on top of seven small cervical vertebrae, which are sustained mainly by ligaments and muscles. The neck is particularly vulnerable to injury by excessive hyperflexion and hyperextension. So all the Coaches should have a good knowledge to understand the bodys ability to resist sports injuries . *Dr.Stalin.Ph.D., LIFE MEMBER - INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF SPORTS MEDICINE.
