SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Arsene Wenger has appeared to confirm that Manchester United are competing to sign Thomas Vermaelen but admitted Arsenal would prefer to sell him abroad. United are reportedly ready to make an improved £15 million offer for the defender after Barcelona opened talks with Arsenal over his sale. Meanwhile, Arsenal could face Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in Fridays draw for the play-off round to reach this seasons Champions League group stage. The Gunners are one of five teams entering at this stage and join the five winners from the non-champions section of the third qualifying round. Athletic Bilbao knocked Manchester United out of the Europa League at last-16 stage in 2011-12. The two-legged ties will be played on 19-20 and 26-27 August. Luis Suarezs legal team are confident that the Barcelona striker will have his four-month ban for biting halved.
