SPOTLIGHT By Christine Jofel Zoe A. Luarez Go for Green Sta. Josefa is known for its agricultural programs which promote organic farming. Last December 2014, Mr. Nilo Acupinpin, a local farmer from Barangay San Jose, received a national citation from the ABS-CBN’s weekend show Agri Tayo Dito for his meritorious patronization of organic farming. As the environment continues to get degraded because of the commercially and synthetically produced products like fertilizers and pesticides for farming, it is about time for those who are inclined into agriculture to adhere with the programs of the Department of Agriculture (DA) which cap the utilization of natural or organic farming. Mr. Acupinpin deserves to be the best example for all farmers for this cause. According to DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala who authored the ‘Organic Agriculture Act of 2010’, farmers should patronize organic farming to restore the soil’s fertility, enable farmers save on chemical inputs, increase farm productivity and income, and provide consumers with natural, more nutritious food products. If farmers not only from Sta. Josefa but also from other parts of the country go for organic farming, medium and long-term effects of agricultural intervention on the agro-ecosystem would prevail; meaning, while they aim to produce food, they also establish ecological balance to prevent soil fertility and pest problems. Aside from that, organic farming entails cheaper expenses yet yields higher income. Farmers would no longer have difficulty competing with the rest of the Asian nations especially when ASEAN 2015 would fully blast since their production costs are low but the volume of harvested crops is high. See? While the cost of production is reduced, the hidden costs of agriculture to the environment in terms of natural resource degradation are also concentrated. There is indeed no denying that organic farming is much way better than synthetic. Some of the farmers in Sta. Josefa, and these include Mr. Acupinpin, have already savored the outstanding results of expending this. Hesitate no more. Let’s all go for green.
