SPRUCED UP WAR MEMORIAL November will see North Cowton - TopicsExpress

SPRUCED UP WAR MEMORIAL November will see North Cowton residents pay their respects to those that died in the First World War at the village’s newly refurbished memorial. Gone are the stains and weather damage from the marble war memorial – thanks to two donations - including £1500 from Richmondshire District Council’s Communities Opportunity Fund (COF). Cash also came from the War Memorial Trust (£1191) and the Parish Council. The work - which was completed earlier this year – saw the marble cleaned, joints re-pointed and cracks grouted. The lead lettering was also re-fixed and coated with special oil. Parish Councillor, Councillor Jeremy Marley who was responsible for obtaining the grants said he was especially delighted with the renovations because of his personal interest in the memorial. His great uncle, Gunner Mark Purvis Marley, is one of the people it commemorates - he was killed in action in France in 1918 and his grave, which has been visited by his family, is in the Duisans British Cemetery in Etrun, France. Councillor Jane Parlour added “I was delighted to help secure the funding contribution from the council’s Communities Opportunity Fund to help with such a worthy project. Without it we would not have been able to complete the restoration.”
