SPURS 1-1 LEICESTER CITY U21S - MATCH REPORT Kenny McEvoy struck in the first half as our Under-21s drew 1-1 with Leicester City on Monday lunchtime. McEvoy’s thumping close-range effort saw us draw level after Joe Dodoo had given the visitors the lead from the penalty spot on 16 minutes. We enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the second period, but were unable to find a winner, with the points shared in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League. Both teams fielded strong sides, with Harry Kane and Zeki Fryers lining up among our ranks, while Leicester’s line-up featured the likes of Sean St Ledger and Jeff Schlupp. Goalkeeper Jordan Archer saw a lot of the ball in the opening stages, as Leicester pressed high up the field on a blustery afternoon at the Training Centre. We went close in the 13th minute when Kane broke down the middle and fed Cameron Lancaster, whose deflected shot was gathered by goalkeeper Conrad Logan. Three minutes later, a long kick from Logan was flicked on into the path of Schlupp, who was bundled over in the box by Dominic Ball, with the referee awarding a penalty. Dodoo duly converted from 12 yards, putting the visitors in front. Fryers forced a corner at the other end after exchanging passes with Shaquile Coulthirst and embarking on a powerful run down the left flank before unleashing a shot from a tight angle which was put behind. Milos Veljkovic took the flag kick, but Logan made a comfortable catch. The advancing Logan beat McEvoy to a clever through ball by Kane in the 20th minute, before Kane himself saw a shot charged down by Ryan Watson after breaking through into a shooting position from midfield. Substitute goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux was called into action on 26 minutes, getting down low to his left to keep out Schlupp’s shot. But three minutes later we were back on level terms. Kane did well to hold onto possession as he twisted and turned on the right side of the box, crossing for McEvoy to fire powerfully home from six yards. Logan got his hands to it, but was unable to keep the drive out. Vigouroux saved at the feet of Schlupp after a great three-man move involving Michael Cain and Tom Hopper as Leicester sought to regain the lead, but in the wake of that attack, we went close on the counter. Coulthirst held the ball up well in midfield and fed Kane, but he fired over the bar from the edge of the box. The hosts were indebted to Ryan Fredericks for keeping the scores level five minutes before the break, the defender stretching to divert Dodoo’s point-blank range shot behind for a corner after a powerful burst into the area by Hopper. Neither side really took the initiative as the second half got underway, with both teams guilty of losing possession momentarily in a midfield battle. Ball made a great covering tackle when Harry Panayiotou was played in behind the defence, while Veljkovic’s right-footed effort failed to seriously trouble keeper Logan. Leicester came close to re-taking the lead in the 54th minute when Schlupp’s fierce drive cannoned off the post, while Kane pulled a shot wide after being fed by Lancaster. We were enjoying most of the possession as the second half wore on, although we failed to create many clear-cut chances. Kane’s free kick in the 69th minute deflected off the wall and out for a corner after Nabil Bentaleb was brought down 25 yards out, while the same attacker was denied by the outstretched leg of committed goalkeeper Logan six minutes later. There was a corner kick apiece in the last few minutes, Leicester winning theirs after Vigouroux parried Watson’s shot behind. But neither flag kick caused any real threat, with the points ultimately shared.
